McIlravy, Thomas win gold medals for the United States at the 1999 Poland Open in Krotoszyn, Poland, March 4-6 

Two U.S. wrestlers claimed gold medals for the U.S. at the 1999 Poland Open in Krotoszyn, Poland, March 4-6. Lincoln McIlravy (Coralville, Iowa/Gateway 2000) won the gold medal at 152 pounds while Sheldon Thomas (Clarion, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) won the gold medal at 119 pounds.

McIlravy won four matches on his way to the gold-medal match where he decisioned Sergej Demlschenko of Belarus, 3-1. He won his first match by an injury default over Marusz Wojcik of Poland. McIlravy then scored a decision over Karol Chilinski of Poland, 3-0, and pinned Michel Cedzic Flerslegers of France. In the semi-finals, McIlravy decisioned Aleksander Andrusiak of Poland, 6-1.

Thomas won two matches on his way to the gold-medal match. He pinned Stanislaw Surdyka of Poland and then scored a technical fall over Radoslaw Wierzbicki of Poland, 11-0. Thomas won the gold medal by scoring a decision over Sylweser Wojtak of Poland, 9-3.

The U.S. claimed three other medals at the tournament. Brandon Slay (Amarillo, Texas/Dave Schultz WC) claimed the silver medal at 167.5 pounds for the U.S., while Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) won the bronze medal at 127.75 pounds and Jason Robison (Edinboro, Pa./Edinboro WC) won the bronze medal at 213.75 pounds.

Slay won a silver medal for the U.S. at 167.5 pounds. He won four matches before losing to Marcin Jurecki of Poland, 5-1. He first decisioned Radoslaw Hosbik of Poland, 6-0, then scored a technical fall over Piotr Gierat of Poland, 10-0. In his third match, he pinned Vadimir Uaitikutis of Lithuania to move to the semi-final match where he scored a technical fall over Daryl Weber of the United States, 11-0.

Boumans pinned his first two opponents, then lost to Viatheslav Sanjek of Belarus, 10-3. He decisioned Michal Malkiewicz of Poland, 7-0, to claim the bronze medal.

Robison won the fifth medal for the U.S. when he scored a technical fall over Maciej Sulgan of Poland, 11-0. He started by defeating Maksynilian Wiek of Poland, 7-0, and J.J. McGrew of the U.S., 5-4. Robison moved to the bronze-medal match when he lost to Sergiej Priadyn of the Ukraine, 3-0.
