GHAFFARI AND  NIEBUHR WIN SILVER MEDALS, BOSCH WINS A BRONZE MEDAL AT THE HUNGARY GRAND PRIX IN NYIREGYHAZA, HUNGARY, MARCH 6-7 

Two U.S. wrestlers claimed Greco-Roman silver medals and one captured the bronze medal at the 1999 Hungary Grand Prix in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, March 6-7.

Silver medalists at the Hungary Grand Prix were 1996 Olympic silver medalistMatt Ghaffari (Avon Lake, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds and Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds.

Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo/New York AC) won the bronze medal for the United States at 187.5 pounds.

Ghaffari had a 4-2 record in the tournament. In the second round, Ghaffari dropped a 4-1 decision to 1997 World silver medalist Mihaly Deak Bardos of Hungary. Although he was second in his pool competition, Ghaffari won two matches in a special wrestle-off to qualify for the semifinals. After advancing over Gyula Branda of Hungary in the semifinals, Ghaffari lost by injury default to Deak Bardos in the gold-medal match.

Niebuhr first won by injury default over Laszlo Kiraly of Hungary then decisioned Andras Balla of Hungary, 3-0, to move to the quarterfinals. He then pinned Marcin Letki of Poland to move to the semifinals where he decisioned Alexandar Jovancsevity of Yugoslavia. 3-1. In the gold-medal match, Niebuhr lost a by referee's decision to Zsolt Simita of Hungary, 1-1 in overtime.

Bosch scored a decision over Lajos Viragh of Hungary, 13-10, then won by injury default over Janos Kismoni of Hungary. In his third match, Bosch pinned Sergey Ohyzkov of the Ukraine. In the semifinals, he lost a decision to Zsolt Simita of Hungary, 4-1. In the bronze-medal match, he won by injury default over Alexandar Jovancsevity of Yugoslavia.

Other wrestlers placing for the U.S. team were Mike Ellsworth( Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) ,who took fourth place at 152 pounds, and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC), who placed sixth at 167.5 pounds.
