The U.S. claimed two gold medals, one silver medal and four bronze medals.
Kerry Boumans (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) won the gold medal at 127.75 pounds, while Brandon Slay (Amarillo, Texas/Dave Schultz WC) won the gold medal at 167.5 pounds.
Boumans defeated four opponents to win the gold medal. He first decisioned Veselin Ivanov of Bulgaria, 9-1, then decisioned David Leprins of France, 6-1, to move to the semifinals. Boumans scored a technical fall over Matvel Matveev of Russia, 10-0, to move to the gold-medal match where he decisioned Serafim Todorov of Bulgaria, 3-1.
Slay first decisioned Petdr Kasabov of Bulgaria, 9-6, then defeated Miroslav Gotchev of Bulgaria by a referee's decision, 1-1. In the semifinals, Slay decisioned Aidun Halimoglu of Turkey, 6-4, and won the gold medal by defeating Nuri Zengin of Turkey by a referee's decision, 2-0.
Other medalists for the U.S. include: silver medalist J.J. McGrew (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 213.75 pounds, and bronze medalists Jason Robison (Edinboro, Pa./Edinboro WC) at 213.75 pounds, Mark Ironside (Iowa City, Iowa) at 138.75 pounds, Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) at 152 pounds and Airron Richardson (Toledo, Ohio/Cliff Keen WC) at 286 pounds.
McGrew defeated three opponents before losing the gold-medal match to the 1996 and 1997 World Champion, Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow of Russia, by a 4-0 decision. He scored technical falls over his first two opponents. In the semifinals, he decisioned Rolf Sherrer of Switzerland, 10-6.
Robison also competed in the 213.75-pound weight class where he won the bronze medal. He first won by technical fall over Aleksandar Latchev of Bulgaria, 10-0, then defeated a wrestler from Kamerun by a technical fall, 13-0. In the semifinals, Robison lost a decision to Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow of Russia, 5-0, then decisioned Rolf Sherrer of Switzerland, 3-0, for the bronze medal.
Ironside decisioned his first two opponents to advance to the semifinals. He lost in a decision to the 1998 World Champion, Serafim Barzakow of Bulgaria, 4-0, to move to the bronze-medal match. There, he decisioned Al. Bulianski of Turkey, 7-0.
Steiner first scored a decision over Jordan Radev of Bulgaria, 5-2, then decisioned Banoit Shuler of France, 9-1, to move to the semifinals. He then lost by a decision to Orest Skobelski of the Ukraine, 4-2. Steiner defeated Stefan Bonev of Bulgaria by a technical decision, 11-0, to claim the bronze medal.
Richardson claimed the bronze medal at 286 pounds by defeating Feng Aigang of China, 3-0. He first decisioned Chen Xingqiang of China, 3-0, then decisioned Redjeb Aschabaliev of Russia, 3-1, to move to the semifinals. There, he lost a decision to Zakeria Guclu of Turkey, 7-0.
Fourteen teams competed in the tournament, but no team scores were kept.
