Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Rulon Gardner (Gilbert, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) won gold medals for the United States. Gruenwald claimed the title at 127.75 pounds, while Gardner won the gold medal at 286 pounds.
Gruenwald won five matches to claim the gold medal. He first won by technical fall over Grzegorz Szyszka of Poland, 12-1, then won by technical fall over Sylvester Charzewski of Poland, 14-3. He decisioned the rest of his opponents to claim the medal; Mariusz Trojanowski of Poland, 9-0, Farhat Mageramov of Belarus, 8-0, and Remigijus Sukavicius of Lithuania, 7-0, in the gold-medal match.
Gardner first won by technical fall over Tomasz Lisek of Poland, 19-5, then decisioned Jacek Fafinski of Poland, 4-1, and won by injury default over Mindaugas Mizgatis of Lithuania in the semifinals. He pinned Andrei Chehovski of Belarus for the gold medal.
TC Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./Wildcat WC) won the silver medal at 167.5 pounds. He decisioned Mariusz Boguta of Poland, 6-3, then pinned Aleksej Putiakov of Lithuania and won by technical fall over Tomasz Krzysztowski of Poland, 11-0. In the semifinals, Dantzler scored a decision over Andrzej Tomaszewski of Poland, 11-6, and lost in the finals by a decision to 1997 World silver-medalist Artur Michalkiewicz of Poland, 5-4.
Claiming a bronze medal for the United States were Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 187.25 pounds and Kevin Bracken (Dekalb, Ill./New York AC) at 138.75 pounds.
Niebuhr won three of his four matches to win the bronze medal. He pinned Piotr Kaczmarkiewicz of Poland and decisioned Aleksandr Minchur of Belarus, 6-3, to move to the semifinals. There, he lost by a pin to eventual champion Marek Szustek of Poland and won by injury default over Adam jaroszek of Poland in the bronze-medal match.
Bracken scored decisions over Krysztof Szezepanik of Poland, 5-3, Josip Powalski of Poland, 7-0, and Andrzei Szezpanik of Poland, 7-0. His only loss was a decision to Woldzienerz Zawadsei of Poland, 3-0, in the semifinals.
The United States placed first in the tournament, followed by Legia WWA (Poland), Belarus, Slask Wroclaw (Poland), Chelm (Poland), Wisloka Debica (Poland), Unia Raciborz (Poland), Lithuania, Piotrcovia Piotrkow (Poland) and PTC Pabianice (Poland).
