Rosselli, Robie and Morrison claim gold medals at the NYAC Freestyle Championships in New York, N.Y., March 28Nationally ranked wrestlers, Lou Rosselli (Edinboro, Pa./NYAC), Tony Robie (Edinboro, Pa./NYAC) and Dean Morrison (Morgantown, W.Va./Team Excel) were among the champions at the NYAC Freestyle Championships in New York, N.Y., March 28.
Rosselli decisioned Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan./Dave Schultz WC), 3-0, to win the 119-pound gold medal, and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Rosselli also scored victories over Chris Bollin (Leavenworth, Kan./Sunkist Kids), 3-2, and won by technical fall over Carlos Restrepo (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca WC), 11-0. He was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, a 1997 World Cup champion and is No. 4 on the U.S. national team.
Robie scored a decision over Sean Harrington (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 11-2, to claim the gold medal at 167.5 pounds. Robie tallied four victories before the title match. He scored a technical fall over Luke Broadwater (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca WC), 10-0, a technical fall over Asnag Castelly (Unattached), 11-0, decisioned Noel Thompson (NYAC), 8-0, and decisioned Scott Norton (Sunkist Kids), 7-5. Robie is currently ranked No. 4 on the U.S. national team.
Local star, Morrison, a Copaigue, N.Y. native, won four matches to claim the gold medal at 187.25 pounds. Morrison pinned Jonathan Boyd (Dave Schultz WC), at 2:57, and scored a technical fall over Samie Manmond (Lehigh WC), 11-0. He decisioned Steve Williams (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl./Seahorse WC), 2-0, to move to the final match where he decisioned Damian Hahn (Lakewood, N.J./NYAC), 3-1. Morrison was a 1994 NCAA Champion for West Virginia University and is currently ranked No. 4 on the U.S. national team.
Other individual champions were: Kevin Saniga (Edinboro, Pa./NYAC) at 127.75 pounds, Jeff Bedard (Ithaca, N.Y./Team Excel) at 138.75 pounds, Gabe Webster (Ithaca, N.Y./Cornell WC) at 152 pounds, Pat Lynch (Ocean City, N.J./NYAC) at 213.75 pounds and Angelo Borzio (E. Stroudsberg, Pa./NYAC) at 286 pounds.
The NYAC Freestyle Championships is a warm-up event for the U.S. Nationals in Las Vegas, NV, April 28-30.
