Session I at Avista Corp. XXVII World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling 

United States defeats Germany, 20-9, in first session

The United States defeated Germany 20-9 in the first session of the Avista Corp. XXVII World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, April 2 at the Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash.

1998 World Champion Sammie Henson (Norman, Okla/Sunkist Kids) opened the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Vasili Zeiher, in 4:37. Henson was able to turn Zeiher for back points numerous times.

Tony Purler (Clarion, Pa./Sunkist Kids) broke a 4-4 tie, with four quick points in the last minute of the match, for an 8-4 win over Othmar Kuhner at 127.75 pounds.

Two-time World medalist Cary Kolat (Bellefonte, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) opened up his offense in the second period with five points, on the way to a 6-3 victory over Jurgen Scheibe at 138.75 pounds.

1998 World bronze medalist Lincoln McIlravy scored early and often, on the way to a 10-0 technical fall over Jens Gundling in 2:33 at 152 pounds

The first German win came at 167.5 pounds, where 1994 World Champion Alexander Leipold stopped Steve Marianetti (Urbana, Ill./New York AC, 3-0.

1997 World Champion Les Gutches (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) won a 3-0 overtime decision over Hans Gstottner at 6:39 at 187.25 pounds. Gutches led the bout 1-0 at the end of the six-minute regulation, then scored two takedowns to reach the mandatory three points for the win.

Heiko Balz of Germany, a 1992 Olympic silver medalist, defeated J.J. McGrew (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) 8-0 at 286 pounds.

Closing out the match, Kerry McCoy (State College, Pa./New York AC) defeated 1995 World silver medalist Sven Thiele, 3-1, in overtime at 6:45. McCoy was fourth in the 1998 World Championships.

The U.S. had a 1-0 record, and Germany a 0-1 record in the World Cup after the match.

Iran defeats Canada, 22-7, in first session

Iran defeated Canada, 22-7, in the first session of the Avista Corp. XXVII World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, April 2 at the Spokane Arena in Spokane, Wash. Iran won the team title at the 1998 World Championships, and is expected to challenge for the team title at the World Cup.

Iran won the first three matches, with victories by Gholam Reza Mohammadi at 119 pounds, Ali Reza Dabier at 127.75 pounds and Medhi Baraati at 138.75 pounds. Dabier, a 1998 World Champion, scored an 11-0 technical fall over Dennis Pagliniwan at 2:45.

Canada scored a victory at 152 pounds, when Daniel Igali, who was fourth in the 1998 World Championships, defeaqted Ali Akbar Nejad, 5-2.

Iran won the next bout at 167.5 pounds, when Pejman Dorostkar scored a 2-0 overtime referee's decision over Nick Ugoalah.

Iran claimed the next two matches, with victories by Ferydon Ghanbari at 187.25 pounds and Ali Reza Heidari at 213.75 pounds. Heidari, a 1998 World Champion, defeated Dean Schmeichel by technical fall, 10-0 at 4:20.

Wayne Weathers of Canada won the final match, beating Ebrahim Mehraban 4-2 at 286 pounds.

Iran had a 1-0 record and Canada had a 0-1 record in the World Cup after the match.
