IRAN DEFEATS THE UNITED STATES, 17-13, AT THE DAN GABLE CLASSIC IN DES MOINES, IOWA, APRIL 8 
  Iran defeated the United States, 17-13, in the second annual Dan Gable Classic, a freestyle dual meet held at Valley High School in Des Moines, Iowa, April 8. 
  The United States won three of the first four matches, but was unable to hold the lead against the powerful Iranian heavyweights. 
  Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan.) opened the meet with a 5-3 win over Reza Ghassemi at 119 pounds. Akin is ranked No. 2 in the USA at the weight class. 
  In a battle of World Champions, Mohammad Talaie of Iran stopped Terry Brands (Iowa City, Iowa) at 127.75 pounds, 5-2. Talaie was the 1997 World Champion, while Brands won World titles in 1993 and 1995. 
  Bill Zadick (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) responded with a 3-1 win over Mehdi Baraati at 138.75 pounds. 
  In a rematch of their exciting bout at the 1999 World Cup, Lincoln McIlravy (Coralville, Iowa/Gateway WC) stopped Amir Tavakolian, 3-1 at 152 pounds. McIlravy also won a close 5-3 match over Tavakolian at the Avista Corp. XXVII World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling in Spokane, Wash., April 3. 
  Iran won the next three matches, clinching the team victory after the 213.75 pound weight class. 
  Pejman Dorostkar, who was fourth in the 1998 World Championships, scored the only point of the match in a 1-0 overtime win over Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 167.5 pounds. 
  Ferydon Ghanbari, a former Junior World Champion, scored a 5-0 shutout over Derek Jones (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds. 
  1998 World Champion Ali Reza Heidari dominated the match on the way to a 10-0 technical fall over Chad Lamer (Coralville, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 213.75 pounds. 
  The United States won the final match, as 1998 U.S. Nationals Champion Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) scored a 4-1 overtime win over Ebrahim Mehraban at 286 pounds. 
  The event was taped by USA Sports Broadcasting, for a taped-delayed broadcast on ESPN later this spring.
