CUBA BEATS THE UNITED STATES 16-14, IN WORLD DUAL MEET OF FREESTYLE WRESTLING IN MADISON, WIS., APRIL 9 

Cuba defeated the United States 16-14, in a World Dual meet of freestyle wrestling in Madison, Wis., April 9.

The dual meet outcome was determined in the final match at super heavyweight, when 1998 World Champion Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba defeated 1998 U.S. Nationals champion Tolly Thompson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids), 6-0. Going into that match, the United States led, 14-13, in the team standings.

Cuba opened the meet with a 3-1 victory by 1997 World Champion Wilfredo Garcia over Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan.) at 119 pounds.

Two-time World Champion Terry Brands (Iowa City, Iowa) scored the first U.S. victory, beating Yoel Garcia, 11-2 at 127.75 pounds.

Veteran Carlos Ortiz of Cuba edged Troy Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel), 3-1 at 138.75 pounds.

Terry Steiner (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) won by forfeit at 152 pounds. At 167.5 pounds, Sean Bormet (Madison, Wis./Team Excel) scored an impressive 1:49 pin over Walter Torrientes at 167.5 pounds. Bormet and the Steiner twins are assistant wrestling coaches at the Univ. of Wisconsin.

The United States led 14-7 after the Bormet pin, but was shut out in the next three matches and did not score another team point.

1998 World bronze medalist Yoel Romero defeated Derek Jones (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 5-0 at 187.25 pounds. 1996 Olympian Wilfredo Morales followed with a 5-0 shutout of John Kading (Evanston, Ill./Wildcat WC) at 213.75 pounds. Rodriguez clinched the Cuban win with his shutout win over Thompson.
