Pennsylvania Wins the 1999 National Wrestling Coaches Association/USA Wrestling Kellogg's National Scholastic Duals in Battle Creek, Mich., April 9-11The First Annual Kellogg's National Scholastic Duals were held at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Michigan, April 9-11. State teams from across the country wrestled for top honors in "The Battle in Battle Creek." The tournament featured wrestlers that had competed in over 30 state finals.
The Northeast finished with the top three out of four places, with Pennsylvania and New Jersey battling down to the last weight class to decide the team champion.
The two teams traded the lead through the early weights before New Jersey opened up a 19-5 lead after the 140-pound weight class. Team Pennsylvania won five of the next six matches and pulled ahead, 23-22, going into the heavyweight match. Tim Taylor (Clearfield High School, Penn.) defeated Tommy Curl (Paulsboro High School, N.J.) by a major decision, 17-8, to clinch the win for Team Pennsylvania.
Michigan/Navy defeated Team New York, 46-17, to claim third place for the host state. Florida finished fifth with a 31-24 hard-fought win over Oregon and Michigan/Maroon defeated Team Colorado to claim seventh place.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association will continue this event next year in a 16-team format. The state teams that competed this year will automatically be invited back and the selection committee will fill the remaining eight spots from the states that apply for admission. With the support of the NWCA, Kellogg's and USA Wrestling, this event will be the premiere folkstyle competition for underclassmen and will provide the opportunity for state bragging rights.
The Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights (103-140) was Patrick Williams, a 4A state champion from South Dade High School in Florida. The Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights (145-275) was Jesse Jantzen, a three-time state champion from Shorham-Wading River High School in New York.
