McNab and Ruiz defend their titles at the 1999 FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Team TrialsBrandon McNab (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) and Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/Husker WC) defended their titles at the 1999 FILA Junior National Championships and World Team Trials held at the Air Force Academy Cadet Fieldhouse in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 22. McNab scored a decision over Pablo Sanchez (So. San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Grapplers), 5-3, in overtime at 138.7 pounds, and Ruiz decisioned Garrett Lowney (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 7-0, at 213.75 pounds, to defend his title. Both will compete for the United States at the 1999 FILA Junior Greco-Roman World Championships in Bucharest, Romania, August 12-15.
Other champions who will represent the United States include: Jasper Hubbert at 110 pounds, Dustin Brewer (Kansas City, Mo.) at 119 pounds, Darnell Lollis (Colorado Springs, Colo./Twisters) at 127.7 pounds, Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 152 pounds, Carl Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Univ. of Pittsburgh) at 167.5 pounds, Mike Cuperas (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 187.25 pounds and Paul Devlin (Livingston, N.J.) at 286.5 pounds.
Many of the best high school and college wrestlers in the nation competed at the tournament. These athletes are between 17 and 20 years old, and include college underclassmen, military athletes and high school wrestling stars.
The outstanding wrestler of the tournament was the champion at 167.5 pounds, Carl Fronhofer. The most falls award went to D.J. Radnovic II at 286.5 pounds with three falls in 1:55. The team award went to the Minnesota Storm with 56 points, and second place was the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club with 38 points.
