JAY ANTONELLI NAMED 1998 USA WRESTLING GRECO-ROMAN COACH OF THE YEARJay Antonelli of Quantico, Va., has been named 1998 Greco-Roman Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling. This is the first time that Antonelli has received this prestigious award.
Antonelli serves as head coach of the U.S. Marines Corps team, which won the 1998 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships, snapping the U.S. ArmyĆs winning streak in Greco-Roman.
In the final dual meet, the Marines tied the Army, 15-15, but won the tie-breaking procedure by scoring more team points than the Army throughout the tournament, 64-59. The Marines had four individual Armed Forces Greco-Roman champions in 1998.
Antonelli also serves as one of the coaches for the combined Armed Forces team, which has dominated Greco-Roman on the national level in recent years. The Armed Forces won the Div. I team title at the 1998 U.S. Greco-Roman National Championships in Orlando, Fla. In addition, the Armed Forces also won the Greco-Roman team title at the 1998 University National Championships in Evanston, Ill.
Two members of the U.S. Marines team qualified for the 1998-99 Greco-Roman Team USA: Duaine Martin, ranked No. 3 at 127.75 pounds and Dan Hicks, ranked No. 2 at 213.75 pounds.
Antonelli has coached a number of U.S. teams on international tours. He has been active in coaching youth Greco-Roman teams in the past, including working with the New Jersey Junior National team.
As an athlete, Antonelli was a nationally-ranked Greco-Roman wrestler for the U.S. Marines team. He placed eighth in the 1995 U.S. Nationals, and was fifth in the 1994 World Team Trials. He competed in college for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He competed for the Pingry School in New Jersey in high school.
