NANCY SCHULTZ NAMED 1998 USA WRESTLING WOMAN OF THE YEAR 

Nancy Schultz of Foster City, Calif. has been named the 1998 Woman of the Year by USA Wrestling. This award recognizes an outstanding woman for her contributions to the sport of wrestling.

Nancy Schultz is the widow of 1984 Olympic Champion Dave Schultz, an international sports hero, who was respected around the world for his goodwill, sportsmanship and talent.

She serves as the president of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Foundation, which provides opportunities for talented freestyle, Greco-Roman and women wrestlers to pursue their dreams. The organization was founded by Nancy and many friends within wrestling, in honor of her husband Dave, who was tragically murdered in January 1996.

The Dave Schultz Wrestling Club placed second in the 1998 U.S. National Championships among Div. I clubs in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, as well as finishing second as a team in the womenÕs division. The club has also been very successful at USA Wrestling age-group events.

The Dave Schultz Wrestling Club must actively raise funds year-round in order to support its club members, including hosting an annual golf tournament prior to the U.S. Nationals. In addition, each year, the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club participates in the Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France, an includes a group of fans as part of the tour.

Schultz is also the honorary co-chairperson of the ÒWrestling for the Next MillenniumÓ campaign, serving alongside honorary co-chairperson Dan Gable. Through this historic campaign, USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum are working together to raise $10 million by the end of the year 2000.

She was also instrumental in the development of a new major international wrestling competition, the Dave Schultz Memorial International Championships, which was held for the first time in Colorado Springs, Colo. in February 1999. The tournament features outstanding international competition in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.

Schultz serves as a member of USA WrestlingÕs Board of Directors, as well as a member of the Board of Governors for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. She was involved in the creation of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, given each year by the Hall of Fame to outstanding high school wrestling scholar-athletes.

In addition to her wrestling activities, Nancy is the proud mother of two active children, Alexander and Danielle.
