SCOTT BECK NAMED 1998 USA WRESTLING MAN OF THE YEARScott Beck of Boulder, Colo., has been named the 1998 Man of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling. This award recognizes an outstanding man for his contributions to the sport of wrestling.
Beck is the Chairman of the ÒWrestling for the Next MillenniumÓ campaign. Through this historic campaign, USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum are working together to raise $10 million by the end of the year 2000.
Beck has worked tirelessly on the development of this campaign, using his skills as one of the nationÕs most prominent businessmen to advance the sport that he loves. In addition to assuming the leadership role in the campaign, he has made a substantial personal contribution to the campaign, as well as to USA Wrestling.
ÒFour years of high school wrestling had an absolutely transforming influence on my own life,Ó Beck said. ÒOn the mat I learned the lessons of commitment, hard work, passion, leadership, and of course, winning and losing.Ó
By chairing this campaign, Beck has dedicated himself to pass those gifts along to future generations.
As part of the campaign, USA Wrestling aims to raise $6 million to endow its National Team programs. Another $1 million would fund USA WrestlingÕs exciting new ÒBeat the StreetsÓ program for underprivileged youth in urban areas.
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum aims to raise $2 million to complete the expansion of its current facility and to endow its Honors Program. An additional $1 million earmarked for the National Wrestling Coaches Association will endow the organizationÕs staff, help wrestling to face challenges at both the high school and collegiate levels and better educate its coaches.
Beck is a member of the USA Wrestling Board of Directors, and has provided leadership to the organization for a number of years. He is also one of the most avid wrestling fans in the nation, attending numerous major wrestling competitions to support the U.S. athletes.
He has been named as team leader for the 1999 U.S. Pan American Games freestyle wrestling team.
Beck was a former chairman of Blockbuster Video and founder of Boston Chicken and Einstein Bros. Bagels. His leadership was instrumental in the success of each of these businesses within their market. He has also been very active in a number of civic and community organizations.
