UKRAINE NAMES ROSTER FOR FREESTYLE DUAL MEET AGAINST BIG TEN ALL-STAR TEAM, TO BE HELD AT BRYCE JORDAN CENTER AT THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY, MAY 23

The wrestling federation of Ukraine has announced the lineup for a freestyle wrestling dual meet against the Big Ten all-star team, which will be held at the Bryce Jordan Center at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., on Sunday, May 23.

The dual meet is funded by a grant to the Big Ten Conference as part of the NCAA/U.S. Olympic Committee conference grant program.

Ukraine is one of the top wrestling nations in the world, with numerous World and Olympic medalists in its program. Ukraine placed second in the 1997 World Championships and fourth in the 1998 World Championships and has won the European team championships on the Senior level.

The team that Ukraine will send to Pennsylvania will include university age athletes, many who have already been very successful on the international level and are hopefuls for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Leading the team will be Oleksandr Zaharuk (60 kg/132 lbs.), who has won a gold medal at the European Championships for the last three years. Zaharuk placed fourth in the 1997 World Championships, and is a top medal hopeful for the 2000 Olympics.

Another top athlete on the Senior level is Viktor Bilokopytyy (65 kg/143 lbs.), who placed fifth in the 1999 European Championships. Among his age-group achievements was a bronze medal at the 1999 Junior World Championships and a silver medal at the 1994 Cadet World Championships.

Another top young star is Taras Danko (87 kg/191.25 lbs.), who won a bronze medal at both the 1997 and 1998 Junior World Championships. Danko also was second in the 1998 Junior European Championships.

Among the other team members who have earned place finishes at an age-group World Championship event are Vasyl Fedoryshyn (60 kg/132 lbs.), Volodymyr Syrotin (78 kg/171.5 lbs.), Roman Snelegeda (87 kg/191.25 lbs.) and Vasyl Tesmynetskyy (132 kg/290.25 lbs.).

Rounding out the Ukrainian team are Gevork Markaryan (56 kg/123.25 lbs.), Andriy Shyyka (65 kg/143 lbs.), Oleg Kushnir (78 kg/171.5 lbs.), Andriy Vyshar (87 kg/191.25 lbs.) and Ivan Ishchenko (132 kg/290.25 lbs.).

The Big Ten Conference all-star team lineup is currently being finalized and will be announced at a later date. All of the athletes on the Big Ten team have been very successful on the national and conference level in wrestling.

In addition, many of the Big Ten athletes have considerable experience and success in freestyle wrestling on age-group levels. Freestyle is one of the two international styles of wrestling, and differs from collegiate-style wrestling in many ways.

The competition will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pa., on Sunday, May 23.

Tickets are $6 for adults, and $3 for youth, Penn State students or senior citizens. They can be ordered by phone through the Bryce Jordan ticket office at 800-863-3336. A $1 processing fee will be added to all tickets ordered by phone.
