1996 Olympic champion Filiberto Azcuy lead the Cuban team with a 4-0 record and the individual title at 167.5 pounds. Azcuy clinched the title with a 7-3 decision over 1999 U.S. Nationals champion Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids). Cuba won six of the eight individual titles.
Highlights for the U.S. team include a win by Billy Pierce (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at heavyweight when he decisioned 1992 Olympic champion Hector Milian, 3-1, in overtime during session one. Pierce went on to be the co-champion at heavyweight with Matt Ghaffari (Avon Lake, Ohio/Sunkist Kids). Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) also defeated the 1992 Olympic champion, Milian, 2-0, in overtime to score a big win.
Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) won the title at 127.75 pounds when he decisioned Roberto Monzon of Cuba, 3-2, in overtime. Shawn Sheldon (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) took second place in the individual race at 119 pounds when he lost to the champion, Lazaro Rivas of Cuba, 9-2.
The most falls award went to Dan Niebuhr (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) of USA 3 at 187.25 pounds, with three falls in 14:13. The award for the best technical wrestler of the tournament went to Juan Moren of Cuba, the individual champion at 138.75 pounds.
