LEROY EVANS ELECTED SECRETARY OF USA WRESTLING 

Leroy Evans of Hughson, Calif. has been elected as the Secretary for USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body of amateur wrestling in the United States. Evans replaces Bill Scherr of Evanston, Ill., who resigned from the position this spring.

Evans has been a national leader in wrestling for many years and has played an important role in the growth of the sport on the grass-roots level. He was named USA Wrestling's Man of the Year in 1995.

He has served on USA Wrestling's Board of Directors for many years as a representative of the U.S Wrestling Officials Association (USWOA). He previously served in the position of Second Vice-President for USA Wrestling. Evans has served as the State Chairperson of California/USA Wrestling for many years, helping build the largest state organization in the nation. California became the first state association ever to register more than 10,000 members in 1989, and the organization had over 14,000 members in the 1997-98 season.

Working alongside his wife Diane, Evans has been a leader in providing wrestling opportunities for athletes of all ages in the state of California. A number of major national and regional events have been hosted in California during his tenure as State Chairperson.

He is also one of the top referees in the nation, holding the highest international rating. Evans has worked numerous major international and national wrestling competitions including the 1996 Olympic Games. He is the Vice President of the USWOA, and has served many years on the organization's Executive Board.

Evans was named USA Wrestling State Chairperson of the Year in 1989. He received the Official of the Year Award from the USWOA in 1984.

Evans is a teacher at Turlock High School. He coached wrestling for over 20 years, serving as head wrestling coach at Turlock and Hughson High Schools. He competed in wrestling on the high school and college levels. He attended Modesto Junior College and Humboldt State College.
