Saunders pinned Julie Gonzales (Vallejo, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) in 2:00, to win the Mini-Tournament at 101.25 pounds. Saunders went down to 101.25 pounds, after winning the 1999 U.S. Nationals Championships at 112.25 pounds.
Stephanie Murata (Boca Raton, Fla./Sunkist Kids), the 1999 U.S. Nationals Champion at 123.25 pounds, moved down to 112.25 pounds and won the Mini-Tournament. She scored a technical fall over Patricia Miranda (Stanford, Calif./Dave Schultz WC), 11-0, to advance to the championships match series against 1999 U.S. Nationals runner-up Malissa Sherwood (Rocklin, Calif./Dave Schultz WC).
Sara McMann (Marion, N.C./UM-Morris) pinned Afsoon Johnston (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) in 0:35 to win the Mini-Tournament at 123.25 pounds. McMann will face 1999 U.S. Nationals runner-up Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minnesota Storm) in the championship series.
Jimi D. Hornbuckle (Poteau, Okla./Dave Schultz WC) decisioned Megan Andrews (Napa, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers), 10-7, to win the Mini-Tournament at 136.5 pounds. She will face 1999 U.S. Nationals Champion Lauren Wolfe (Ithaca, N.Y./Michigan WC) in the championship series Saturday.
At 149.75 pounds, Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind./UM-Morris) decisioned Abigale Schwarzberg (San Francisco, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers), 3-0, to win the Mini-Tournament. Downing will battle two-time world medalist Sandra Bacher (San Jose, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) in the championship series.
Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won by a technical fall over Dominique Smalley (Ames, Iowa/Dave Schultz WC), 15-4, to win the Mini-Tournament at 165.25 pounds. Smith will compete against three-time World silver medalist Kristie Stenglein (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) to try and win the trials.
Some other matches will also take place for a true third place winner on Saturday as well.
The competition features the best women freestyle wrestlers in the United States. All of the athletes who qualified for the event, except for the 1999 U.S. Nationals champion at each weight class, participated in Friday's Mini-Tournament. Each Mini-Tournament winner will battle the national champion in a best-of-three series on Saturday.
The winners of Saturday's championships series at each weight class will represent the United States at the 12th Women's World Championships in Boden, Sweden, September 12-15.
