The United States is among the top wrestling nations in the world, and numerous world-class athletes are expected to compete in the event. The U.S. won eight wrestling medals, including three gold medals, at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. This included five medals in freestyle and three medals in Greco-Roman. In addition, wrestling is one of the most successful of all U.S. sports teams in the history of Olympic competition.
The venue for the tournament will be Reunion Arena, the home of the NBA Dallas Mavericks and the newly crowned NHL Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars, which has the capacity to seat 16,000 fans. This will be the first Olympic Trials event in any sport ever held in Dallas.
Organizers have set a goal of establishing a new attendance record for a USA Wrestling event. The 1996 Final Freestyle Olympic Team Trials, which were held in Spokane, Wash., set records for attendance at a freestyle wrestling event in the United States. A total of 24,578 spectators attended the 1996 Final Freestyle Olympic Team Trials in Spokane, Wash.
The Dallas bid for the Olympic Team Trials was presented by the the Mayor's Sports Marketing Advisory Council and the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Dallas 2012 Bid Committee was also very active in the process. A successful Olympic Trials in wrestling should help build exposure for the city in its efforts to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
