The winners of the Mini-Tournament will compete against the top seed in each weight class in a best-of-three series on Sunday, June 27. The champion will compete for the U.S. team at the 1999 Greco-Roman World Championships in Athens, Greece, September 23-26, and the 1999 Pan American Games in Manitoba, Canada, July 24-August 8.
Other Mini-Tournament champions include: Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds, Shon Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo./No Limit Soldier) at 138.75 pounds, Marcel Cooper (Quantico, Va./Armed Forces) at 152 pounds, Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./Armed Forces/Army) at 167.5 pounds, Dan Henderson (Gresham, Ore./Dave Schultz WC) at 187.25 pounds, Mike Foy (Minneapolis, Minn./Sunkist Kids) at 213.75 pounds and Matt Ghaffari (Avon Lake, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 286 pounds.
Gruenwald defeated Broderick Lee (Huntington, Calif./Peninsula WC) in overtime 4-1. Lewis scored a decision over Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 4-0, to win the Mini-Tournament. Cooper decisioned Chris Saba (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 5-0.
Sieracki defeated Travis West (Portland, Ore./Jets), 9-2 to qualify for the championships series. Henderson decisioned Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC), 6-0. Foy, a 1988 and 1992 olympian, decisioned Dan Hicks (Quantico, Va./Armed Forces), 5-2. Ghaffari decisioned Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 2-0 in overtime to win the Mini-Tournament.
The Championship final series will be on Sunday, June 27. The first session begins at 11:00 a.m.
