Oklahoma I tops Team Ohio, 24-24 on tiebreaker, at National Freestyle Duals

OKLAHOMA I WINS 1999 NATIONAL JUNIOR FREESTYLE DUALS, BEATING TEAM OHIO, 24-24, ON A TIE-BREAKER 

Oklahoma I claimed the team title at the 1999 National Junior Freestyle Dual Championships, needing tie-breaking criterion to defeat Team Ohio, 24-24 in the finals held at Hamilton Fieldhouse at the Univ. of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla., June 27.

Oklahoma I was awarded the team title, based on most victories in the dual meet. Oklahoma I had seven wins in the match, while Team Ohio had five.

The match was not determined until the final bout at 275 pounds. Mike Little of Oklahoma I moved up from 220 pounds and defeated Dean Taylor of Ohio, 3-2, knotting the final team score at 24-24.

The match was very even in the lightweights, with Team Ohio leading 12-11 after a Clark Forward victory at 143 pounds. Oklahoma I responded with three straight wins by Tyrone Lewis (154), Wes Roberts (165) and Travis Brotten (178). Alex Lammers of Ohio won at 191.5 pounds, and after Tommy Rowlands claimed a forfeit at 220 pounds, Team Ohio led 23-21 going into the deciding match.

Team New Jersey claimed third place, with a 28-24 victory over Minnesota Red. Fifth place went to Team California, which defeated Team Iowa 31-22. Oklahoma II placed seventh, scoring a 27-25 victory over Kansas Gold.

The consolation champion was Team Georgia, which stopped Colorado Gold 31-23 in the ninth place finals.

The National Junior Greco-Roman Dual Championships were held June 24-25 at the same location. The Minnesota Me's won the team title, defeating Team California in the finals.
