GRECO-ROMAN CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT NATIONAL KIDS WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WATERLOO, IOWA, JULY 1Greco-Roman champions were crowned at three age divisions at the 1999 USA Wrestling National Kids Wrestling Championships, at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, July 1.
Competition was held at the Midget (9-10 years), Novice (11-12 years), and Schoolboy/girl (13-14 years) divisions.
Also up for grabs is the USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown. To win, an athlete must win USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle the same year. The 1999 USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Championships were held in Topeka, Kan. in April.
Going into the Greco-Roman event, 24 athletes in the field are eligible for the Triple Crown. At the end of the Greco-Roman finals, 14 still remain eligible.
Those still with a chance to win the Triple Crown include Midget wrestlers Riley Adamson of New Mexico (55), Chance Martin of Kansas (95), Duane Zlatnick of Kansas (112) and Charles Bryant of Texas (120). Novice wrestlers still eligible for the Triple Crown are Victor Weideman of Nebraska (60), Angel Escobedo of Indiana (80), David Craig of Florida (90), Andrew Gevig of Wisconsin (95), Cole Swenson of Minnesota (105), John Dahl of Minnesota (120) and Joe Zlatnick of Kansas (140). Schoolboy wrestlers still in the hunt are Alex Tsirsis of Indiana (95), Shane Miller of Wisconsin (120) and Justin Jordan of Iowa (160).
Only two wrestlers won the Triple Crown in 1997, and eight in 1998. No wrestler has ever won the Triple Crown twice. Of those still in contention for the 1999 Triple Crown, only Jon Dahl of Minnesota, a 1997 winner, has a chance to win the Triple Crown for a second time.
For the first time in the three-year history of the event, there were co-champions at a weight class. In the 55-pound Midget class, Dak Adamson and Riley Adamson of Albuquerque, N.M. qualified for the gold-medal match. According to USA Wrestling rules on the age-group level, when this occurs, the athletes can be declared co-champions if they do not wish to wrestle each other.
Dahl won the USA Wrestling Kids National Greco-Roman title for the third straight year. Winning Kids National Greco-Roman titles for the second straight year were Novice wrestler Anthony Morales of Nevada (130) and Schoolboy wrestlers Brett Land of California (70) and Brent Metcalfe of Michigan (90).
A total of 491 athletes, representing 38 states, entered the Greco-Roman competition year, which runs Wednesday and Thursday. This is a record number of Greco-Roman entries in this event, and an increase of 57 athletes from the previous year. The number of entries increased in all three age divisions at the competition.
The freestyle competition will be held on Friday and Saturday.
