TEN WRESTLERS WIN PRESTIGIOUS TRIPLE CROWN TITLES AT NATIONAL KIDS WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WATERLOO, IOWA, JULY 3Freestyle champions were crowned at three age divisions at the 1999 USA Wrestling National Kids Wrestling Championships, at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa, July 3. Competition was held at the Midget (9-10 years), Novice (11-12 years), and Schoolboy/girl (13-14 years) divisions.
Ten athletes won the prestigious USA Wrestling Kids Triple Crown. To win, an athlete must win USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle the same year. The 1999 USA Wrestling Kids Folkstyle Championships were held in Topeka, Kan. in April.
The 1999 Triple Crown include Midget wrestlers Riley Adamson of New Mexico (55) and Duane Zlatnick of Kansas (112).
Triple Crown Novice winners were Victor Weideman of Nebraska (60), Angel Escobedo of Indiana (80), David Craig of Florida (90), Cole Swenson of Minnesota (105), Jon Dahl of Minnesota (120), Joe Zlatnick of Kansas (140) and Blake Roemer of Ripon, Wis. (140++).
The only Schoolboy Triple Crown champion was Alex Tsirsis of Indiana (95).
Only two wrestlers won the Triple Crown in 1997, and eight in 1998. Jon Dahl of Minnesota, also a 1997 winner, became the first to win the Triple Crown for a second time. Also for the first time, a pair of brothers won the Triple Crown in the same year, as Duane and Joe Zlatnick won the award in 1999.
In the freestyle finals, just as in Thursday's Greco-Roman finals, there were co-champions at a 55-pound Midget class, Dak Adamson and Riley Adamson of Albuquerque, N.M. According to USA Wrestling rules on the age-group level, if brothers make the finals, the athletes can be declared co-champions if they do not wish to wrestle each other.
Twenty-three wrestlers were double champions, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles this year. Double champions in the Midget division were Adamson and Zlatnick, plus Nick LeClare of Coggon, Iowa (80) and Deron Winn of Liberty, Mo. (103).
