FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships scheduled for Sydney, Australia

The 1999 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships are scheduled for Sydney, Australia, site of the 2000 Olympic Games, August 19-22. The best 17-20 years olds in the world will take part in this competition.   

The team will be made up of nine wrestlers, all of whom were champions of their weight classes at the 1999 FILA Junior Freestyle National Championships and World Team Trials held in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 25.

T.J. Hill of Farmington, Mo., the 1998 Silver Medalist at the Junior World Freestyle Championships, will compete in the 110-pound weight class this year. With his win at the National Championships, Hill has won 11 USA Wrestling age-group titles, and is now tied with 1996 Olympic Silver Medalist Brandon Paulson of Anoka, Minn., and Billy Pierce of Minneapolis, Minn., for the most age-group national titles.

Leroy Vega of Minneapolis, Minn., will be traveling to the World Championships for the second year in a row. Vega, a University of Minnesota wrestler, competed at the Greco-Roman World Championships last year, finishing ninth at 119 pounds.

Jared Lawrence of Minneapolis, Minn., will also travel to Sydney to compete in the World Championships at the 152-pound weight class. Lawrence, who competes for the University of Minnesota, won titles in both styles at the World Team Trials.

The 1998 Junior National Champions, Ben Martinez of Pixley, Calif., at 127.7 pounds and Damion Hahn of Lakewood, N.J., at 187.25 pounds, will both travel to Sydney for the 1999 World Championships.

Tony Gansen of Stillwater, Okla., Outstanding Wrestler for freestyle at the World Team Trials, will also compete with the 1999 World Team. The Oklahoma State student decisioned the 1998 Junior World champion Don Pritzlaff of Champ Builders in the World Team Trial finals at 167.5 pounds.

Other champions include: Virginia Tech wrestler Sean Gray of Blacksburg, Va., at 138.7 pounds, Tommy Rowlands of Columbus, Ohio, at 213.75 pounds and University of Illinois wrestler John Lockhart of Champaign, Ill., at 286.5 pounds.

FILA Junior wrestlers must be born between 1979-1981, and are all college underclassmen, military athletes and high school wrestling stars. There are nine weight classes: 110, 119, 127.75, 138.75, 152, 167.5, 187.25, 213.75, and 213.75-286.5.

Team USA will be coached by Brad Penrith, assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa, and Mark Schwab, assistant coach for the University of Minnesota. The team will attend training camp from Aug. 1-9 in Colorado Springs, Colo., then travel to Canberra, Australia, for an acclamation camp from Aug. 10-17. Canberra is the home of Australia's Olympic Training Center.

The 1999 FILA Junior Freestyle World Championships will begin on Aug. 19 in Sydney, and last until Aug. 22.
