Three to compete in second FILA Junior Women's World Championships

Olivia Ocampo of Oxnard, Calif., Jenny Wong of Woodburg, Minn., and Aimee McNab of Morris, Minn., will compete in their second straight FILA Junior Women's World Championship when they travel to Bucharest, Romania, August 12-15. The Championships will run in conjunction with the FILA Junior Men's World Championships. 

At the 1999 FILA Junior Nationals and World Team Trials, current Senior National Champion Ocampo (101 pounds) pinned Jennifer Donahoe of Goodrich, Mich., in 2:49. The University of Minn.-Morris student finished fourth at last year's World Championships in Fredrikstad, Norway. Ocampo is the No. 2 wrestler in the nation.

Wong (119 pounds) won by technical fall over Michalle Domagas of Vallejo, Calif., 11-0, at this year's World Team Trials. She finished eighth at the 1998 FILA Junior World Championships, competing in the 110-pound weight class.

McNab (138.75 pounds) won by a technical fall over Elena Mena of St. Paul, Minn., 10-0, at the World Team Trials this year. At last year's Worlds, McNab finished ninth in the 127.75-pound weight class.

Iris Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo. (165.25 pounds), who finished second at the Senior Nationals, will also be competing in this year's World Championships. Smith is the ranked second in the nation on Team USA.

Other members of the 1999 FILA Junior World Team include: Thisbe Reardon of Oakley, Calif. (94.75 pounds), Danielle Hobeika of Cambridge, Mass. (110 pounds), Senior Team USA member Sara McMann of Lock Haven, Pa. (127.75 pounds) and Senior Team USA Member Katie Downing of Pendleton, Ind. (149.75 pounds). Hobeika will be taking the place of Junior National Champion Erin Tomeo of Vozant, Penn., who will be traveling with the Cadet World Team.

Coaching this year's FILA Junior Women's World Team will be Head Coach Doug Reese, head coach at the University of Minnesota-Morris, and Assistant Coach Jack Griffin, a former NCAA champion and assistant wrestling coach at Northwestern University.

The team will participate in a training camp at Northwestern from August 5-7. They will travel to Bucharest, Romania on August 8.
