Team of ten to compete at the Cadet Greco-Roman World Championships

The 1999 U.S. Cadet Greco-Roman team is set to compete at the 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman World Championships, July 28-31, in Nykoping, Denmark. 

The team, made up of ten wrestlers, will have a mini-camp in Fargo, N.D., from July 21-23, then leave for Denmark. These wrestlers qualified at the Cadet World Team Trials held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., April 9.

Michael Simpson of Anaheim, Calif., won the title by forfeit in the 110-pound weight class. Simpson competed in the 1998 Cadet World Greco-Roman Championships as an alternate and finished seventh in the world.

Justin Millard of Bellefonte, Pa., will compete in his second Cadet World Championship. Millard finished eighth at last year's freestyle championships at 187.5 pounds.

Two pairs of brothers will be traveling to the World Championships: Jason and James Woodall of DuPont, Pa., and Zach and Josh Lamano of Layton, Utah. James Woodall won the 167.5-pound weight class again after taking home a double title at the 1998 Cadet World Team Trials. Woodall finished fifth in the 1998 Cadet World Championships in freestyle. His brother Jason won the title in the 152-pound weight class. Zach Lamano decisioned Shawn Bunch of Kansas, 4-2, while his brother Josh decisioned Chris Fleeger of Pennsylvania, 7-3, to make the U.S. Cadet World team in Greco-Roman.

Other qualifiers include: Luke Smith of Chippewa Falls, Wis., at 101.5 pounds,Daryl Spackman of Utah at 92.5 pounds, Tony Hook of Sandpoint, Idaho at 138.75 pounds and Eli Ross of Owatonna, Minn., at 220.25 pounds.

The 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team will be coached by Joe Russell of Oregon and Gary Mayabb of Missouri. Head coach Russell is the assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, while Mayabb coaches a high school team in Kansas City, Mo.

To be eligible for Cadet competition, wrestlers must be born either in 1983 or 1984. Ten weight classes comprise the Cadet division: 92.5, 101.5, 110, 119, 127.75, 138.75, 152, 167.5, 187.25, 220.25+.
