Asics/Vaughan Junior Nationals Head to Fargo, N.D., for sixth straight year

  Four-time Junior National champion Jason Powell of Oklahoma will compete in the 1999 Asics/Vaughan Junior National Championships on   July 17-24. Over 1,500 of the best high school wrestlers in the country will join him to compete in the tournament at the Fargodome on the   campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.  

If Powell wins the titles in both styles, he will be tied with Sean Hage of Georgia for the most titles won in this event (6). Powell has won double titles for two years running. He was also named to the 1998 and 1999 Asics Tiger High School All-American First Team.

Returning in hopes of repeating as champions in the Greco-Roman tournament are Terrence Thompson of South Carolina in the 98-pound weight class, Ben Martinez of California in the 123-pound weight class and Zac Thumb of North Dakota at 275-pounds.

Thumb, a hometown favorite, won a 3-1 overtime decision over Dusty Darveaux of Pipestone, Minn., with two takedowns in overtime to win his first national title.

Two runner-ups will be returning to competition: Josh McLay of Minnesota at 154 pounds and Josh Etu of New York at 220-pounds.

In the freestyle tournament, two more wrestlers will try to capture the title for the second straight year: Nick Simmons of Michigan in the 98-pound weight class and Zach Roberson of Kansas at 114.5-pounds.

Damion Hahn of New Jersey will attempt to win his third junior freestyle title at 178 pounds. He decisioned Scott Kaufman of Iowa, 5-3, at last year's competition. During the match, the lead changed three times.

Three Junior National runner-ups will also be returning to the tournament this year: Ty Reynolds of North Carolina at 132 pounds, Branson Phillips of Oklahoma at 143 pounds and Tommy Rowlands of Ohio at 191.5 pounds.

The tournament will be held at the Fargodome on the North Dakota State University campus in Fargo, N.D. It is being held in conjunction with the 1999 AdvoCare Cadet National Championships. Together, this tournament comprises the largest wrestling event in the world.

To be eligible for Junior competition, a wrestler must have been born on no earlier than September 1, 1979, and still be in high school. Twelve weight classes comprise this division: 98, 105.5, 114.5, 123, 132, 143, 154, 165, 178, 191.5, 220, 220-275 pounds.

Weigh-ins for Junior Greco-Roman wrestlers are from 8:00-9:00 a.m. on July 18 in the Fargodome-South. Session I of the Junior Greco-Roman tournament begins July 18 at 4:00 p.m., session II begins July 19 at 9:00 a.m., session III begins July 19 at 4 p.m., and session IV begins July 20 at 9:00 a.m. The Junior Greco-Roman finals and awards will be from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on July 20.

Weigh-ins for for Junior Freestyle wrestlers are July 22 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. in the Fargodome-South. Session I of the Junior freestyle competition begins July 22 at 3:00 p.m., session II begins July 23 at 9:00 a.m., session III begins July 23 at 4:00 p.m., and session IV begins July 24 at 9:00 a.m. The Junior Freestyle finals and awards will be from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. on July 24.
