1995 WORLD CHAMPION HALL LEADS U.S. GRECO-ROMAN TEAM FOR THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES IN WINNIPEG, CANADA, JULY 24-25The best Greco-Roman wrestlers in the nation have qualified to compete for the U.S. team at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Greco-Roman wrestling competition is scheduled for July 24-25.
The U.S. team was determined at the 1999 Greco-Roman World Team and Pan American Games Trials, held in Tampa, Fla., June 27-28.
The event also determined the United States team for the 1999 World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Athens, Greece, Sept. 23-26.
Leading the U.S. team will be 1995 World Champion Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) at 127.75 pounds. Hall won a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina, his only previous Pan American Games appearance.
Hall was also a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1994 World bronze medalist. He has won eight straight U.S. Nationals titles in his weight class.
Joining Hall on the team will be 1995 Pan American Games bronze medalist David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 152 pounds.
Zuniga was tenth in the 1996 Olympic Games and placed fourth in the 1994 World Championships. He claimed his first U.S. Nationals Greco-Roman title this season. Zuniga was an NCAA runner-up for the Univ. of Minnesota and also competed for Utah State during his college career.
Another experienced star on the team will be three-time U.S. Nationals champion Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds. Lindland placed sixth in the 1998 World Championships, and has competed on the last two U.S. World teams. Lindland was named the 1998 Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. Lindland was a college wrestling star at the Univ. of Nebraska.
Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm), who placed ninth at the 1998 World Championships, will compete at 187.25 pounds. Clark won his first career U.S. Nationals title in 1999, and defeated two-time Olympian Dan Henderson in the World Team Trials finals. Clark was an NCAA runner-up for the Univ. of Oklahoma, and was also an All-American for San Diego State Univ.
Competing at 213.75 pounds will be 1998 U.S. World team member Jason Klohs (Maple Grove, Minn./Minnesota Storm). Klohs was the 1998 U.S. Nationals champion, and competed in the 1998 World Championships. He was third at the 1999 U.S. Nationals. Klohs competed in college for the Univ. of Wyoming and the Univ. of Minnesota.
Klohs won the 1999 World Team Trials event in Tampa, but 1999 National Champion Randy Couture (Gresham, Ore./Sunkist Kids) could not compete due to injury. A Special Wrestle-off for the World Team berth will be held at a later date.
A pair of wrestlers who claimed the No. 1 position in the United States for the first time this year will also compete on the U.S. team: Steven Mays (Pensacola, Fla./U.S. Navy) at 119 pounds and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 286 pounds. Both are reigning Armed Forces champions at their weight classes.
Mays placed third in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He won his first U.S. Nationals title in April, defeating two-time Olympian Shawn Sheldon in the finals. He qualified for the Pan American Games and World teams by defeating 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson in the finals series of the World Team Trials.
Byers has also had a spectacular season, winning both the U.S. Nationals and World Team Trials. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the 1999 U.S. Nationals in Greco-Roman. He stopped 1996 Olympic silver medalist Matt Ghaffari in the finals of the World Team Trials.
The U.S. Pan American Games team member at 138.75 pounds will be 1998 U.S. Nationals champion Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army). Nieradka placed second to Shon Lewis in the World Team Trials in Tampa, but Lewis could not compete at the Pan American Games due to a military obligation. Nieradka was an NCAA All-American for Oregon State Univ. before entering the U.S. Army.
All athlete selections are subject to final approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee.
The U.S. team will be led by head coach Joe DeMeo of Niskayuna, N.Y. and assistant coach Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo.
DeMeo served as head coach of the 1994 and 1998 U.S. Greco-Roman World teams. The 1994 World Team placed in a tie for seventh in the team standings and featured one medalist. The 1998 World Team finished eleventh, with one medalist. He was an assistant coach on the 1991 Pan American Games team which placed second in the team standings. He was head coach of three World Cup teams (1980, 1984, 1987) and has been on the coaching staff of five U.S. Olympic teams.
Russell is a club coach with Team Excel, and serves as an assistant coach with the U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athletes. In addition, Russell has helped coach USA Wrestling age-group state teams for 10 years. He worked four years as an assistant wrestling coach at Portland State. Russell was a Greco-Roman Team USA member as an athlete, and boasts silver medals at the Pan American Championships and the World Cup.
Other coaches that will be working with the team are USA Wrestling National Greco-Roman Coach Steve Fraser of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as Dan Chandler of Minneapolis, Minn.
Fraser, a 1984 Olympic champion, has served as USA Wrestling's full-time professional Greco-Roman coach since 1996. Fraser was a Pan American Games gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1983. Fraser led the U.S. to one of its best performances ever with three silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. He has worked hard to help improve the entire national Greco-Roman effort, from youth through the Olympic levels.
Chandler, a veteran coach with numerous international assignments, will serve as head coach of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team. As an athlete, Chandler won medals in three Pan American Games, including gold medals in 1975 and 1979. Chandler was the head coach of the 1995 and 1997 U.S. Greco-Roman World teams. He served as the assistant coach for the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, and served on the coaching staff at the 1988 and 1996 Olympic Games. Chandler works as the state coach for Minnesota USA Wrestling and the Minnesota Storm club.
Once every four years, the nations from the North America, South America and Central America converge to participate in the prestigious Pan American Games, a multi-sport event featuring the best athletes in the Western Hemisphere.
The last Pan American Games were held in 1995 in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The United States placed second in the Greco-Roman competition, with 10 medalists including three individual champions.
The 1995 U.S. Pan American Games Greco-Roman champions were Mujaahid Maynard (105.5), Dennis Hall (125.5) and Matt Ghaffari (286).
