Cael Sanderson (Heber, Utah/Iowa State), Zach Thompson (Cleveland, Ohio/Iowa State) and John Ward (Jay, Okla./Oklahoma) all won gold medals at the Korean University Championships in Seoul, Korea. They participated in the first Big 12 All-Star Overseas Freestyle Wrestling Tour, June 5-14 in Korea.Sanderson was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament and finished the tournament undefeated. Sanderson, competing at 85 kg, had two pins and one technical fall against three Korean wrestlers. He also decisioned Big 12 teammate Brad Vering. Sanderson won both the 1999 Big 12 and NCAA Division I Championships and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA Championships. (Names of the Korean athletes were unavailable at press time.)
Thompson, competing at 97 kg, had only one loss in the tournament. With a referee's decision, Thompson lost to Codaira Kiyotaka of Japan after overtime, nine minutes, and a 2-1 score. In another overtime match and referee's decision, Thompson defeated a Korean wrestler, 2-0. In the title match, he decisioned another Korean wrestler, 6-0. Thompson finished eighth at the 1999 NCAA Championships, earning him All-American honors. He was also the Big 12 champion.
Ward, competing at 130 kg, won both of his matches in the Korean tournament. He first decisioned Yano Tohru of Japan, 6-2, before winning a technical fall over a Korean wrestler, 11-0. Ward placed fifth at the 1999 NCAA Championships, earning him All-American honors. Ward also won the Big 12 title.
Three other Big 12 wrestlers earned medals at the tournament: Bryan Snyder (Easton, Pa./Nebraska), Todd Beckerman (Crofton, Md./Nebraska) and Brad Vering (Howells, Neb./Nebraska).
Snyder, who finished second, won three straight matches before falling to a Korean wrestler, 3-1. Competing at 76 kg, he decisioned two of three opponents and won one match by an injury default. Snyder finished fourth at the 1999 NCAA Championships, earning him All-American status.
Beckerman won three of his five matches at the tournament, earning him third place at 58 kg. Beckerman decisioned Big 12 teammate Teague Moore, 8-4, in his first match. He then lost to a Korean wrestler, 5-4, decisioned a Korean wrestler, 3-2,and lost to a Korean wrestler, 10-3, before a final decision over Yamamoto Norifumi of Japan in the bronze-medal match.
Vering, who also finished in third place, won three of his four matches at 85 kg. He opened with two wins over Korean opponents, then lost a decision to Big 12 teammate Cael Sanderson before winning a decision over a Korean wrestler in the third place match. Vering finished fourth at the 1999 NCAA Championships, earning him All-American honors.
Other wrestlers for the Big 12 All-Star team included: Teague Moore (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oklahoma State) at 58 kg, Michael Lightner (Marlow, Okla./Oklahoma) at 63 kg, Rodney Jones (Tulsa, Okla./Oklahoma) at 76 kg, Reggie Wright (Bellwood, Ill./Oklahoma State) at 69 kg and Jason Moore (St. Charles, Mo./Missouri) at 85 kg.
The team also competed in a dual meet with the Korean Senior National Team, June 12. The United States' only victory came from Brad Vering's 3-1 decision in a Greco-Roman match against the Korean University Champion. Korea won the other seven matches.
Coached for the Big 12 team were Head Coach Tim Neumann, head coach at the University of Nebraska, and Assistant Coach Bart Horton, assistant coach at the University of Missouri. Derek Clark of the University of Nebraska served as the trainer for the team.
