Powell captures fifth consecutive Junior National title

Jason Powell of Choctaw, Okla. won his fifth Junior National title Tuesday night at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.  Competing at 114.5 pounds, Powell decisioned Dustin Brewer of Kansas City, Mo., 12-5.  If Powell wins the Junior freestyle title on Saturday, July 24, he will tie the record of six Junior National titles previously set by Sean Hage of Georgia. He was the only returning champion in Junior Greco-Roman competition.   

Other Junior Greco-Roman National champions include: Sterling Oglesby of Gillette, Wyo. at 98 pounds, Cam Jones of Sandy, Utah at 105.5 pounds, Mark Jayne of Elyria, Ohio at 123 pounds, Dusty Spaulding of Council Grove, Kan. at 123 pounds, Matt Nagel of Frazee, Minn. at 143 pounds and Mike Fiedler of Sauk Centre, Minn. at 154 pounds.

Also winning their first titles are Josh McLay of Hastings, Minn. at 165 pounds, Justin Millard of Lacyville, Pa. at 178 pounds, Jon Trenge of Orefield, Pa. at 191.5 pounds, Tommy Rowlands of Columbus, Ohio at 220 pounds and Russ Davie of Perrsyburg, Ohio at 275 pounds.

Oglesby decisioned Justin Pearch of Molalla, Ore., 10-8. Oglesby was an All-American at the 1998 Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals. This is his first Junior National title.

In his first Junior National competition, Jones decisioned Robert Araiza of Chandler, Ariz. to capture his second national title. Jones won the Cadet Greco-Roman National title at 88 pounds at last year's competition.

Jayne defeated Evan Larkin of Vail, Ariz. with a technical fall, 10-0, in 1:22. Jayne won both the Northeast and Southwest freestyle and Greco-Roman Regional Championships in 1999. Larkin is a three-time Junior All-American and four-time Cadet All-American.

Winning his first Junior national title, Spaulding decisioned Bryson Vasquez of Loveland, Colo., 12-3. Spaulding was an All-American at the 1998 Junior Greco-Roman Nationals. He also finished third twice at the Cadet World Team Trials.

Nagel decisioned Matt Keinonen of Dundee, Ore., 14-5. Nagel won the 1998 Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals and finished second at the 1997 tournament. Keinonen was an All-American at the 1998 Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals.

Returning after a third place finish at the 1998 Junior Greco-Roman National Championships, Fiedler won his first national title at this year's tournament. Fiedler decisioned Luke Crockett of Woodland, Wash., 8-0.

Two 1998 Junior Greco-Roman All-Americana battled for the title at 163 pounds, but McLay came out victorious. He decisioned Tyler Nixt of Clarksville, Iowa, 5-0. McLay finished second at the 1998 Junior Greco-Roman Nationals, competing at 154 pounds, and Nixt finished fifth at 165 pounds.

Millard decisioned Ben Heizer of Arlington, Tex., 4-3. Heizer scored two points near the end of the match to bring the score to 3-4, but it wasn't enough and Millard held the lead and earned the win. Millard was a member of the 1998 World freestyle team.

Winning his first Junior National title, Trenge decisioned Alex Lammers of Huber Heights, Ohio, 13-4. Trenge was the 1997 Cadet freestyle National champion. Lammers was an Cadet Greco-Roman All-American in 1998.

Rowlands decisioned David Walker of Seminole, Fla., 8-0. Rowlands was a Junior National All-American for both styles in 1998. He finished fourth at the 1998 Junior Greco-Roman Nationals at 191.5 pounds.

In the last match of the tournament, Davie had the only pin of the finals over Josh Etu of Queensbury, N.Y. in thirty seconds. This Junior title was the first for Davie.

The Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament was Mike Fiedler of Sauk Centre, Minn., the champion at 154 pounds. The award for the most falls in the least amount of time was Bill Stouffer of Lowell, Mich. with 6 falls in 6:05. Team Michigan won the team spirit award for the Greco-Roman competition.

For the second time in three years, one state has had three individual champions in three consecutive weight classes at the Junior Greco-Roman National Championships. In 1997, Nebraska had individual champions at 143, 154 and 165. This year, Minnesota also had individual champions at 143, 154 and 165.

Session I of the Cadet freestyle preliminaries will begin Wednesday, July 21 at 3:00 p.m. in the Fargodome. Junior freestyle preliminaries begin Thursday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m.
