1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman Wrestling Preview

Wrestling powers Cuba and the United States are expected to dominate the action at the 1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman wrestling competition in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, July 24-25.

Cuba has an experienced and talented team, with substantial achievements at the Olympic, World and Pan American Games levels. Cuba won seven of the 10 gold medals at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Leading the Cuban team will be Hector Milian Perez at 130 kg/286 pounds. Perez has won three career Pan American Games gold medals (1987, 1991, 1995) and aims to become the first four-time Pan American Games wrestling gold medalist. He was a 1992 Olympic Champion and 1991 World Champion.

Filiberto Azcuy, competing at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., was a 1996 Olympic Champion and a 1995 Pan American Games Champion. Juan Maren, who wrestles at 63 kg/138.75 pounds, won Pan American Games gold medals in 1991 and 1995, and won a 1996 Olympic silver medal and 1992 Olympic bronze medal. Reinaldo Pena, the 97kg/213.75 pound contestant, was a 1995 Pan American Games champion.

The United States has also sent its best available team, with six of the eight participants holding No. 1 rankings in the nation. In the history of the Pan American Games, the United States has won a medal at every single weight class every year in Greco-Roman wrestling. The United States won the other three gold medals not claimed by Cuba at the 1995 Pan American Games.

Leading the U.S. team will be 1995 World Champion Dennis Hall at 58 kg/127.75 pounds. Hall won a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Hall was also a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1994 World bronze medalist.

Joining Hall on the team will be 1995 Pan American Games bronze medalist David Zuniga at 69 kg/152 pounds. Zuniga was tenth in the 1996 Olympic Games and placed fourth in the 1994 World Championships,

Another experienced star on the team will be three-time U.S. Nationals champion Matt Lindland at 76 kg/167.5 pounds. Lindland placed sixth in the 1998 World Championships, and has competed on the last two U.S. World teams. Lindland was named the 1998 Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling.

The rest of the Pan American nations are expected to battle for the remaining medals, and jockey for position behind Cuba and the United States in the Greco-Roman field.

Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia have had solid performances in recent Pan American competitions, and host Canada, which specializes in freestyle, should also make an impact on their home mats. Panama and Peru should also have medal contenders.

Among the international stars with Pan American Games success are Victor Capacho of Colombia at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., who won a Pan Am Games silver medal in 1991 and Mexico's Armando Fernandez at 58 kg/127.75 pounds, who was a 1995 Pan Am Games bronze medalist. Venezuela features a pair of past Pan American Games medalists, Nestor Garcia at 76 kg/167.5 pounds, who won a silver medal in 1991, and Emilio Suarez at 97 kg/213.75 lbs., a 1995 bronze medalist.
