Draws determined after weigh-ins at 1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman competitionA total of 64 competitors weighed in for the 1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman wrestling competition on Friday, July 23 in Winnipeg, Canada. The tournament will be held at Winnipeg Convention Centre B, on Friday July 24 and Saturday, July 25.
Weight classses are paired based upon a random draw. Wrestling powers Cuba and the United States, the nations favored to challenge for top honors in the tournament, were drawn into different pools in five of the eight weight classes. The results of the pool competitions will determine which athletes qualify for the semifinal rounds.
The three U.S. wrestlers who have drawn Cuban opponents in their pool competition include Steven Mays (Pensacola, Fla./U.S. Navy) at 54 kg/119 pounds, Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 63 kg/138.75 pounds and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 130 kg/286 pounds. All three are competing in their first Pan American Games.
As there are only five athletes at Mays' weight class, a round-robin competition will be held, with each wrestler facing the other four participants. Mays will not face Cuba's Lazaro Rivas until the later rounds. Nieradka will face two-time Pan American Games gold medalist Juan Maren in his pool competition. Maren was a 1996 Olympic silver medalist.
Byers, competing in his first major international competition, will face three-time Pan American Games gold medalist Hector Milian in his pool competition. Milian is attempting to become the first athlete to ever win four Pan American Games gold medals in wrestling. Milian was a 1992 Olympic Champion and 1991 World Champion.
The five U.S. wrestlers who did not draw Cuban athletes in their pools were Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/127.75 pounds, David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 69 kg/152 pounds, Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 167.5 pounds, Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 87 kg/187.25 pounds and Jason Klohs (Maple Grove, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 97 kg/213.75 pounds. Hall won a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Hall was also a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1994 World bronze medalist.
Zuniga, a 1995 Pan American Games bronze medalist Zuniga, was tenth in the 1996 Olympic Games and placed fourth in the 1994 World Championships,
Lindland, Clark and Klohs are all participating in their first Pan American Games. All three competed in the 1998 World Championships, with Lindland placing sixth and Clark placing ninth.
