USA wins all first session matches at 1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman competition

The United States won all of its morning matches at the first session at the 1999 Pan American Games Greco-Roman wrestling competition on Friday, July 23 in Winnipeg, Canada.

Steven Mays (Pensacola, Fla./U.S. Navy) drew a bye in the first round at 54 kg/119 pounds, and will compete for the first time in the second session.

1995 World Champion Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) opened with a dominant 11-0 technical fall over Edgar Ramirez of Guatemala at 58 kg/127.75 pounds, stopping the bout after 4:07. Hall won a gold medal at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Hall was also a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1994 World bronze medalist.

Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) opened with an exciting 11-0 technical fall over Fernando Henrique of the Dominican Republic at 63 kg/138.75 pounds. Nieradka needed just 1:10 to finish the job, including a spectacular five-point throw.

David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) controlled the entire match, on the way to a solid 7-2 victory over Victor Parreno of Peru at 69 kg/152 pounds. Zuniga, a 1995 Pan American Games bronze medalist, was tenth in the 1996 Olympic Games and placed fourth in the 1994 World Championships.

Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) was dominant in a 10-0 technical fall over Olguin Sabua of the Dominican Republic in just 1:36 at 167.5 pounds

Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) also scored a technical fall at 87 kg/187.25 pounds, stopping Mario Miranda of Brazil, 12-2 in 3:26.

Jason Klohs (Maple Grove, Minn./Minnesota Storm) stopped Colbie Bell of Canada, 3-0 at 97 kg/213.75 pounds.

Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) used three exciting throws, scoring a 12-0 technical fall in 1:17 over Edwin Millet of Puerto Rico at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Sessions will also be held at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday. There will be two matchups between World powers Cuba and the United States in the second session. Nieradka will face 1996 Olympic silver medalist Juan Maren in the session, and Byers will battle 1992 Olympic champion Hector Milian.
