Steven Mays (Pensacola, Fla./U.S. Navy), competing in his first match, scored a 10-0 technical fall over Kerry Ashley of Canada in 1:49. Mays had received a bye in the morning session.
1995 World Champion Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) pinned Sidney Guzman of Peru in 1:39 for his second victory of the day. Hall scored a technical fall in the first session. Hall was also a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1994 World bronze medalist.
David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) opened up his offense with an 11-0 technical fall in 2:02 over Cam Weatherby of Canada at 69 kg/152 pounds. Zuniga scored a decision in the first session. Zuniga, a 1995 Pan American Games bronze medalist, was tenth in the 1996 Olympic Games and placed fourth in the 1994 World Championships.
Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) continued to dominate his opponents, with a 10-0 technical fall in just 40 seconds over Carlos Albrecht of Peru at 76 kg/167.5 pounds. Lindland also earned a technical fall in his first match. Lindland placed sixth in the 1998 World Championships.
Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minnesota Storm) threw and pinned Rick Henry of Canada in 1:00 for his second win of the day at 87 kg/187.25 pounds. Clark registered a technical fall in the morning session. Clark was ninth in the 1999 World Championships.
Battling a shoulder injury, Jason Klohs (Maple Grove, Minn./Minnesota Storm) won his second straight shutout victory at 97 kg/213.75 pounds, stopping Antoine Bragaboo of Brazil, 4-0.
Cuba prevailed in the first two head-to-head battles against the United States during the second session. At 63 kg/138.75 pounds, 1996 Olympic silver medalist Juan Maren of Cuba edged Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 4-2 at 63 kg/138.75 pounds.
At 130 kg/286 pounds, 1992 Olympic Champion Hector Milian of Cuba executed an impressive arm throw and pinned Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in 1:42 at 130 kg/286 lbs. Milian is attemping to become the first wrestler to ever win four Pan American Games gold medals.
Another session will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
