Gallick, Hennis win double titles in the 1999 AdvoCare Cadet Freestyle Nationals in Fargo, N.D.Nate Gallick of Tucson, Ariz. and Joe Hennis of Mims, Fla., both won double championships this week as the 1999 AdvoCare Cadet National Championships came to a close Friday night at the Fargodome.
Competing at 103.5 pounds, Gallick decisioned Fred Farmer of Vancouver, Wash., 7-2, in the Cadet freestyle finals. Gallick also took home the title in Greco-Roman competition on Monday night. Farmer was an All-American at last year's Cadet freestyle National tournament, finishing fifth at 94.5 pounds.
Hennis picked up his second title of the week after an overtime decision over Kyle Wellington of Letts, Iowa, 4-1. Hennis decisioned Lanfer Simpson of Waynesburg, Pa. on Monday night, earning his first title of the Cadet National Championships. Hennis was an All-American in the 1998 Cadet Nationals last year for Greco-Roman and freestyle.
Eleven other wrestlers were first-time title winners. They include: Mario Estrada of Fontana, Calif. at 83.5 pounds, Nathan Morgan of Bakersfield, Calif. at 88 pounds, Tim Kephart of St. Louis, Mo. at 94.5 pounds, C.P. Schlatter of Westerville, Ohio at 112 pounds, Marc Harwood of Lakefield, Minn. at 121 pounds and Ryan Herwig of Glen Burnie, Md. at 132 pounds.
Also winning first titles were Derek Zinck of Pennsburg, Pa. at 143 pounds, Ryan Halsey of Oceanside, Calif. at 154 pounds, Matt Lebe of Jeannette, Pa. of 167 pounds, Kurt Backes of Neshanic Station, N.J. at 182.5 pounds and Mike Lehman of Carmel, Ind. at 209 pounds.
Competing at 83.5 pounds, Estrada decisioned Christian Smith, 5-3. Estrada and Smith were tied at 3 after the first period, but Estrada managed to break the tie and end the match without overtime. Smith was the 1999 AdvoCare Cadet Greco-Roman National champion.
Two Californians battled it out for the title at 88 pounds. Morgan decisioned Derek Moore of Redding, Calif., 3-2. Moore was the runner-up in the Greco-Roman competition earlier in the week.
Kephart decisioned Taylor Graham of Forest Grove, Ore., 6-5. Kephart is a 1999 World Freestyle Team member.
Schlatter, the 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman runner-up at 112 pounds, decisioned Burke Barnes of Lake Stevens, Wash., 10-8. Schlatter was behind at the break, 2-5, but came back in the second period to win the title.
First-time National champion Harwood decisioned 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman champion Harry Lester of Akron, Ohio, 5-3, to win the 121-pound title.
Competing at 132 pounds, Herwig decisioned Juan Mora of Vista, Calif., 11-8. He went 9-1 in the tournament.
Winning his first National title, Zinck decisioned Matt Herrington of Cambridge, N.Y., 4-1. Herrington was attempting to go for a double title after winning the Greco-Roman title earlier in the week. Zinck went through the tournament undefeated.
Halsey decisioned Steve Whitby of Lanoka Harbor, N.J., 5-1. Halsey was an All-American in the Greco-Roman competition, finishing third.
Lebe decisioned Pete Friedl of Orland Park, Ill., 6-5. Both of these wrestlers were undefeated before this match. Backes defeated Ryan Proctor of Stoughton, Wis. with a fall in thirty seconds.
Backes brought Proctor to the mat two consecutive times to give him the win. This is Backes' first Cadet National title.
The first technical fall of the night came at 209 pounds. Lehman defeated Dan Daly of Villa Park, Ill., 11-1 in 3:46. He went undefeated in the tournament, compiling a 9-0 record over the three days.
The Outstanding wrestler for the tournament was Kurt Backes of Neshanic Station, N.J. at 182.5 pounds. The award for the most falls in the least amount of time was Dave Miller of Southampton, N.J. with six falls in 4:34.
The 1999 AdvoCare Cadet National Championships and the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships together had 3,477 wrestlers. This tournament help set a record for the number of participants in all USA Wrestling's event throughout the year.
In 48 events held throughout the year there were 17, 052 participants. These events ranged from the National Championships to World Team Trials to all the Regionals held during the year.
