Chance Marsteller (York, Pa./Lancaster Alliance WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Marsteller captured a freestyle title at the Copa Sparta event on Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Marsteller, a high school senior, won the Open division championship against Senior-level wrestlers at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Marsteller won by forfeit over Joseph Pascale in the first round before defeating 2012 Olympian Francisco Soler of Puerto Rico 8-3 in the quarterfinals. He then defeated Joshua Cruz in the semifinals before downing Santiago Martinez 2-0 in the finals.
Marsteller, 18, a senior at Kennard-Dale High School, has committed to wrestle for Penn State next year. Marsteller is 125-0 in high school and will be shooting for his fourth Pennsylvania state title this season.
Marsteller placed fifth at the 2012 Cadet World Championships. He won USA Wrestling’s Cadet Nationals in 2011.
