In honor of wrestling being reinstated as an Olympic sport for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic games USA Wrestling will be counting down the top 10 moments in wrestling’s Olympic fight.

Coming in at No. 3 on our Olympic Fight Top 10 Countdown is the May 29 announcement by the International Olympic Committee to short list wrestling alongside a joint baseball/softball bid and squash as the three sports eligible for a spot as a provisional sport in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games.

In all there were eight sports vying for one provisional spot in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. Five sports, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu, did not make it through this first cut by the IOC.

On May 29 all eight sports presented their case to the IOC Executive Board in St. Petersburg, Russia. The presenters for FILA, the international wrestling federation, were FILA President Nenad Lalovic of Serbia, Jim Scherr of the United States, Carol Huynh of Canada, Daniel Igali of Nigeria and Canada and Lise Legrand of France.

Wrestling was voted through in the first round of voting by the IOC Executive Board receiving a majority of eight votes.

This day marked the end of phase I in the Keep Olympic Wrestling campaign as sights turned to the final vote to decide wrestling’s fate in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 9.
