FARGO, N.D. - Three wrestlers defended their titles at the 1999 ASICS/Vaughan Junior freestyle National Championship in Fargo, N.D., July 24. Two other wrestlers won double titles during the week.Nick Simmons from Williamston, Mich., pinned Robert Araiza III from Chandler,Ariz. in fifty-five seconds to win his second title at 105.5 pounds. Simmons wasnamed to the 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American first team as a sophomore. He is the only sophomore on the team.
Another 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American, Zach Roberson of Overland Park, Kan.,won his second title when he defeated Zach Allen of Shawnee Mission, Kan., 7-3. Roberson won the 114.5-pound title for the second year in a row. Damion Hahn of Lakewood, N.J., became a four-time national champion when he won the 178-pound weight class over Jason Potter of St. Charles, Ill., 9-0. Hahn is a member of the 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American first team and was named the 1999ASICS Tiger Outstanding Wrestler of the year.
Jon Trenge of Orefield, Pa., won a double title in the Junior Nationals at 191.5pounds. He won with a technical fall over Quint Swanberg of Tucson, Ariz, in thefreestyle tournament. Trenge also won a Junior Greco-Roman title on Tuesday night. Last year, he was the Cadet freestyle National champion.
Tommy Rowlands of Columbus, Ohio, also won a double title at 220 pounds. He won with a technical fall over Matt Greenberg of Upper Saddle River, N.J., 10-0.A 1998 Junior National All-American in both styles, Rowlands beat David Walker of Seminole, Fla., 8-0, in the Junior Greco-Roman Nationals earlier this week. He is also a 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American. First-time champions include: Leo Bugaj of El Reno, Okla., at 98 pounds, ChrisRodrigues of Marietta, Ga., at 114.5 pounds, Foley Dowd of Howell, N.J., at 132pounds, Max Odom of Tehachapi, Calif., at 143 pounds and Tyrone Lewis of ElReno, Okla., at 154 pounds. Jereme Maye of Crivitz, Wis., won his first title at165 pounds followed by Steven Mocco of North Bergen, N.J., at 275 pounds. Bugaj pinned Eric Anderson of Browerville, Minn., at 2:55 to win his firstJunior National freestyle title. He won a 1998 Cadet Greco-Roman title and was a 1998 Cadet freestyle All-American. Rodrigues defeated 1998 Junior freestyle National Champion Jason Powell ofChoctaw, Okla., 7-2, en route to his first national title at 114.5 pounds. Powell, a five-time Junior National champion, was attempting to tie the national record for Junior titles with six, but was haulted by Rodrigues. In the title match, Rodrigues scored a technical fall over Kyle Ott of HuberHeights, Ohio, 13-2, in 5:16.
Dowd is a member of the 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American first team. He defeated Cliff Moore of Sherrill, Iowa at 132 pounds, 4-1, to win his first title.
Odom scored a 3-2 decision in overtime over Marcus Levesseur of Minneapolis,Minn. to win his first Junior freestyle National title. Odom was a 1997 Cadetfreestyle National champion.
Lewis is a returning All-American at 143 pounds and won his first title at 154pounds. He scored an overtime decision over Tony Morgan of Choctaw, Okla., 3-0.
Maye scored a quick pin over Wes Roberts of Oklahoma City, Okla. in 1:02 to winthe title at 165 pounds. Maye is a member of the 1999 ASICS Tiger All-American first team.
Mocco was a 1998 Junior freestyle All-American and won his first title thisyear with a win over Pat Miron of St. Croix Fall, Wis., 8-0. Mocco was also atwo-time Cadet All-American. The Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament went to two wrestlers. The first was Chris Rodrigues at 114 pounds and the second was Tommy Rowlands at 220 pounds.The award for the most falls in the least amount of time went to Nick Simmons at105.5 pounds with six falls in 8:03
