In honor of wrestling being reinstated as an Olympic sport for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic games USA Wrestling will be counting down the top 10 moments in wrestling’s Olympic fight.

Holding the No. 6 spot on the countdown is the Olympia Tournament that was contested on July 21 in Olympia, Greece.

The tournament was held on the site of the ancient Olympic Games, the first time in history the grounds were opened for a modern sporting event. The event was supported by the government of Greece and the Olympic Committee of Greece to support wrestling as an Olympic sport.

A wrestling demonstration was held at the site of the ancient Palestra, marking the first time since the close of the ancient Olympic Games in 393 AD that wrestling was held there, and the first time women ever wrestled on the hallowed grounds.

Over 100 wrestlers and 12 countries took part in the Olympia tournament, including world powers Russia and the United States. The finals were held outside at the International Olympic Academy and was streamed live to the world. Many major international media outlets covered the event, and sent images of wrestling at ancient Olympia around the world.

This tournament demonstrated wrestling’s foundation in the ancient Olympics and signified its importance to the future of the Olympics.
