U.S. PAN AMERICAN GAMES GRECO-ROMAN ATHLETE QUOTES SUNDAY, JULY 25, EVENING SESSION (MEDAL ROUND)

Stephen Mays, 54 kg, Bronze medal

"This afternoon, I didn't wrestle well. I tip my hat to the Venezuelan. I didn't train for this event like I need to train for the worlds. Instead, I just dropped weight. I promise to my country and to everybody that I will wrestle better at the worlds. I'd rather peak at the Worlds. You can only peak so many times. I am just starting to learn what is necessary to win at the international level. You have to take it to them."

Dennis Hall, 58 kg, Gold medal

"It was just a counter. He went with a gut wrench that wasn't tight enough. It was the same move that I used in the Olympics against the Koreans. The guy on top was getting tired."

"It is pure excitement. That 's what I train for, I train to win. My biggest thing has been my mental lapses when I get a bad call, but I kept my composure."

"We are good friends with the Cubans, but it is war when we wrestle. He's a tough competitor. I beat him but not soundly."

"I'm wrestling for Dennis Hall. You have to want it so bad. The Pan Ams are great preparation for the Olympics."

Glenn Nieradka, 63 kg, Bronze medal

"My plan was to get a passivity call and score on the lift. I wasn't looking to score on my feet. I don't feel very good about my performance. I am not where I want to be. The bronze medal feels like a consolation prize."

"It is easy to get away with stuff in the States when you are wrestling the same guys. But once you face experienced competition, you can't afford mistakes. When you get behind three points in the States, it's no big deal. Here it is."

"I'm having knee surgery in August, getting some cartiledge removed. Then I start training for the Worlds."

David Zuniga, 69 kg, Silver Medal

"It's not what I was hoping for. It is the worst match that I've wrestled against him. I just didn't have it together. My defense was poor. I'm happy to see this now rather than later. It gives me something to focus on. That sure wasn't a World medalist performance. He wrestled good. It was more me than him, but that's not to take anything away from him. He is one of the best. I'm going to get him one of these times."

"I was a wreck. I wasn't focused. I fell apart. I got discouraged about the lead. I have to work on my mental consistency."

Matt Lindland, 76 kg, Gold Medal

"Lots of my success stems from the (USOTC) resident program. I owe a lot to the two coaches, Anatoly Petrosyan and Steve Fraser."

"Since the Worlds, I've known I have to beat him, or somebody like him. I want the medal at the Worlds. This is a big competition, and I beat him. The other matches were just preparation. I've just wrestled six of the hardest minutes of my life. The lift, it felt like it was the same in 1996 when I threw him. He was tired. He is not as good later in the match, and if I wear him out, his lift is not going to work."

"I felt the crowd when I went out on the mat. We have such great fans. I purposely tried to put pressure on myself at the press conference. I knew if I didn't win, I'd have to go back to the drawing board."

Quincey Clark, 85 kg, Silver Medal

"Oh man, I was so close. Oh man, I was so close. Why did I try the arm spin? I made one bad mistake. I tried to make the arm throw. They gave him points on what was a slip throw."

"Mentally, I put it behind me. He knew he could coast. When you are three points ahead, that's the match. I'm going to have to refine my technique, and get in better shape. I'll be in twice better shape at the Worlds."

"I hate losing, as I try to do everything for God. And also, it just hurts to lose. I wrestled hard, but I didn't get a takedown and I couldn't even turn him."

Jason Klohs, 97 kg, Silver Medal

"The shoulder felt fine. It didn't help or hinder. I was flat and my legs were stiff. I got the first passivity but I couldn't turn him. I was too aggressive. People said I got screwed, but you don't put yourself in a position to get screwed. I was just happy to be able to wrestle. I'm never pleased with second, but I got beat on my mistake. I'm just going to go back to the drawing board, train harder and get better."

Dremiel Byers, 130 kg, Silver medal

"Silver means you got all the way there, but couldn't finish. I lost but he didn't beat me. He's going to have to worry about me. I'll see him again. If I just tell myself to go, and even if I'm not at my best, I can still go with him. I wanted more time in par terre (on the mat). I didn't know I was ahead until the break."

Joe DeMeo, Head Coach

"The whole team performed well. Every individual performed very well. To finish with six in the finals was a good performance. The coaching staff worked well together. I enjoyed the entire experience, as I am sure the whole team did."

"Dennis Hall is a World Champion. When he wins a gold medal, nobody is surprised. He showed great intensity and tremendous work ethic. He is a great wrestler. He has proven it. He's always capable of winning. When he is well prepared, he does a great job."

"When a guy like Matt Lindland beats an Olympic champion, and he beats him badly, it is exciting. He beat him in every position. He had a plan and executed it. He knew how good Azcuy is and he beat him. He beat the hell out of him. It was very exciting."
