Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) and Matt Lindland (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) won gold medals in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, Sunday, July 25. The wrestling competition was held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre Hall B.

Hall won his second career Pan American Games gold medal, scoring an exciting pin over Roberto Monzon of Cuba at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. With Monzon winning 2-0 late in the first period, Hall stepped over an attempted gut wrench, reversed Monzon and pinned him suddenly.

Hall was also a 1995 Pan American Games gold medalist in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Hall was a 1996 Olympic silver medalist and 1995 World Champion.

Lindland dominated the action, on the way to an 8-1 victory over 1996 Olympic Champion Filiberto Azcuy of Cuba at 76 kg/167.5 lbs. Lindland jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first period, on a gut wrench turn, followed by a lift and throw. In the second period, Lindland scored another gut wrench turn to put the match out of reach.

Lindland and Azcuy of Cuba have battled many times in recent years. Although Azcuy still holds the edge in their series, Lindland also defeated Azcuy at the 1996 World Cup in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The United States had four silver medalists: David Zuniga (New Brighton, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 69 kg/152 lbs, Quincey Clark (New Brighton, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 85 kg/187.25 lbs., Jason Klohs (Maple Grove, Minn./Minn. Storm) at 97 kg/213.75 lbs. and Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Zuniga was defeated in the gold-medal match by Liubal Colas of Cuba by technical fall, 11-0 in 3:53. Colas won his second career Pan American Games gold medal. Zuniga won his second Pan American Games medal, a silver to go with a bronze medal at the 1995 Pan American Games.

Clark was defeated in the gold-medal match by Luis Mendez of Cuba, 3-0. Mendez scored a three-point move in the opening seconds of the match, and held off Clark's repeated attacks for the rest of the bout.

Klohs was defeated by Reynaldo Pena of Cuba in the championship match, 3-1. After a scoreless first period, the athletes locked up in the mandatory "clinch" position. Pena threw Klohs for three points on the whistle. Klohs scored a point later in the match, but could not overcome the deficit. It was the second career Pan American Games gold medal for Pena.

Byers lost a 1-1 overtime referee's decision to 1992 Olympic Champion Hector Milian of Cuba in the finals match. Byers scored a one-point reversal in the first period and Milian scored a one-point takedown in the second period. The tie breaker which determined the winner was passivity calls - Byers was penalized for passivity more than Milian during the match.

Milian has become the first wrestler to win four Pan Am Games golds, with titles in 1987, 1991, 1995 and 1999. It was a rematch of a preliminary match on Saturday, when Milian pinned Byers in 1:42

Two U.S. wrestlers claimed bronze medals: Steven Mays (Pensacola, Fla./U.S. Navy) and Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Mays entered Sunday's competition without a loss in his round-robin format, but dropped both of his bouts during the day. In the evening session, he was defeated by eventual champion Lazaro Rivas by technical fall, 12-2 in 5:39

Nieradka defeated Armondo Olivier of Venezuela in the bronze-medal match, 6-0. In the closing seconds, Nieradka scored a takedown, then lifted and threw Olivier to end a closely contested match.

By winning a medal in every weight class, the United States continued its streak of winning a medal in every Greco-Roman weight class since Greco-Roman was added to the Pan American Games in 1975. This is the seventh straight time that the U.S. has medalled in every Greco-Roman event.

The U.S. team is led by head coach Joe DeMeo of Niskayuna, N.Y. and assistant coach Dan Russell of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Cuba won the unofficial team standings with 78 points, including six gold medals and two silver medals. The United States was second with 72 points, followed by host Canada with 47 points.
