Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) has been named to the U.S. Pan American Games freestyle wrestling team roster, and will compete at 58 kg/127.75 pounds.The freestyle wrestling competition will be held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre Hall B in downtown Winnipeg, Canada, on Tuesday, July 27 and Wednesday, July 28.
Guerrero replaces Terry Brands (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) in the U.S. lineup, who could not compete due to injury. Brands has become ill and is unable to compete.
Guerrero is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the United States at his weight class, placing second to Brands at the Freestyle World Team Trials in Seattle, Wash. in June, the qualifying event for the Pan American Games.
Guerrero completed his college career at Oklahoma State Univ. this year, after winning three NCAA Div. I titles for the Cowboys (1996, 1997, 1998). Originally from San Jose, Calif., Guerrero was a three-time California state high school champion.
He has placed third at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships the last two years. He will be competing at his first major international event for the United States on the Senior level, but has represented the USA at a number of major World-level events on the age-group levels.
Guerrero will have the opportunity to compete for his college coach, John Smith, during this event. Smith, the head coach at Oklahoma State, is serving as the head coach of the 1999 U.S. Pan American Games freestyle wrestling team. Smith won two Olympic gold medals and two Pan American Games titles during his outstanding competitive career.
