U.S. sweeps seven matches during third session at 1999 Pan American Games freestyle wrestling competition; Four U.S. wrestlers qualify for finals, and three for semifinals

The United States swept all seven matches during the third session at the 1999 Pan American Games freestyle wrestling competition on Tuesday, July 27 at Winnipeg Convention Centre B.

Four U.S. wrestlers have already qualified for gold medal matches in their weight classes: Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 76 kg/167.5 lbs., Les Gutches (Corvallis, Ore./Sunkist Kids) at 85 kg/187.25 lbs., Dominic Black (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) and 97 kg/213.75 lbs. and Stephen Neal (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Williams pinned Ariel Mild of Argentina in 40 seconds. It was his third win of the day. He will face Yosmany Romero of Cuba in the gold-medal finals.

Gutches scored an impressive 10-0 technical fall in 2:10 over Matt White of Puerto Rico. White was a two-time NCAA All-American at Penn State Univ. Gutches had three wins during the day. He will battle Gary Holmes of Canada in the gold-medal finals.

Black scored a 6-0 decision over Canada's Dean Schmeichel for his second win of the day. Black will battle Cuba's Wilfredo Morales in the gold-medal finals.

Neal pinned Edwin Millet of Puerto Rico in 35 seconds at 130 kg/286 pounds. It was Neal's second pin of the day. The victory qualified Neal for Wednesday's gold medal finals, where he will face 1998 World Champion Alexis Rodriguez for the title.

Three other U.S. wrestlers have advanced to the semifinals, and are still eligible for gold medals: Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/127.75 pounds, Cary Kolat (Bethlehem, Pa./Dave Schultz WC) at 63 kg/138.75 pounds and Lincoln McIlravy (Iowa City, Iowa/Gateway WC) at 69 kg/152 pounds.

Guerrero won two matches during the session by technical fall, beating Edgar Castillo of Panama, 11-0 and Edgar Ramirez of Guatemala, 10-0. The two victories gave him a 4-1 record for the day, which qualified him for the semifinals, where he will face David Ortiz of Venezuela.

Neither Kolat or McIlravy competed during the evening session. Their 2-0 records earlier in the day had qualified them for Wednesday morning's semifinals. Kolat will face Marty Calder of Canada in the semifinals, and McIlravy will draw Daniel Igali of Canada in his semifinal bout.

The only U.S. wrestler who is no longer eligible for a gold medal is Eric Akin (Overland Park, Kan./ Dave Schultz WC) at 54 kg/119 lbs. Akin received an injury default victory over Jose Barreto of Venezuela in the third session. His 2-1 record during the day has qualified him for the bronze medal bout on Wednesday morning, where he will face Geovanny Mora of Mexico.

The U.S. team is led by head coach John Smith of Stillwater, Okla. and assistant coach Greg Strobel of Bethlehem, Pa.

SPECIAL NOTE: A change in schedule was announced during the wrestling action. All of the bronze-medal matches will be held during the Wednesday morning 11:00 a.m. session, while the 7:00 p.m. session will feature only gold-medal matches.
