ZRENJANIN, Serbia – All of the five U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers competing on the opening day of the Cadet World Championships were eliminated with losses and did not reach the medal rounds on Tuesday. Two U.S. athletes who opened with victories, then were defeated, and were not pulled back into the repechage. Both Kyle Norstrem of Florida at 50 kg/110 lbs. and Roy Nash of Utah at 100 kg/220 lbs. finished ninthl Norstrem came out on fire, scoring points from a number of techniques for a quick 10-2 technical fall in 56 seconds over Georgios Georgiadis of Greece. In his second match, Norstrem traded points early with Aidos Sultangali of Kazakhstan, but was not able to slow down the opponent in the second period, losing a 6-14 technical fall. Norstrem was eliminated when Sultangali was beaten in the semifinals. “He came right off the bat and scored two threes. What was impressive was his first three pointer was a reverse gut. He hit a nice lift, but the opponent put him on his back. He fought off his back, and then hit his second three-pointer to win. In the second match, the Kazakhstan wrestler did a real good job keeping Kyle off balance. He was tough and fought real well,†said U.S. World Team Coach Danny Struck. Nash, a U.S. Junior Nationals double champion was able to open up his offense after a slow start to earn a technical fall over R. Ravi of India. In his second match, Nash was in a competitive battle in the first period with Beksultan Makmudov of Kyrgyzstan, but early in the second period was taken down and turned a number of times, dropping a 2-10 technical fall. Nash did not qualify for repechage when Malhmudov was beaten in the semifinals by a Serbian athlete, Boban Zivanovic, by a 1-0 margin. “Roy had a great attitude in camp and warmed up well today. Roy was down in the first period against India, but once he got on top, he started scoring. He took it to him. In the second match against Only one of these athletes was able to come back for a repechage match, Taylor LaMont of Utah at 54 kg/119 lbs. LaMont had a nice throw in the opening period and showed strong defense in the second period to win his first match over Pavel Chaikouski of Belarus, 5-3. He wrestled well against a tough Russian in the second match, but could not score, losing to Kirill Gorshenin, 0-5. When Gorshenin earned a spot in the finals, LaMont was pulled back into repechage. In his next match, LaMont faced Ovidiu Dumitru of Romania in the repechage. Dumitru got on top and was able to turn LaMont for a 4-0 lead, but when he attempted another turn, LaMont reversed him and put him to his back. It appeared that LaMont may have secured a fall, and one of the officials called for it, but they did not get confirmation, so LaMont trailed 3-4. It was the last point scored in the match. The second period was scoreless and LaMont was not able to get a scoring attack to work. Lamont was 11th, just missing a placement. “In his first match against Belarus, Taylor looked great. He came out swinging. He hit a nice headlock to get through the match and he was scoring a lot. The Russian kid was tough, a big kid. The Russian made the finals, so that was a quality loss. He was pulled back in and lost by one to the Romanian. He had him on his back, and almost had him pinned. The referee had his hand up twice for confirmation, but you can’t leave it up to the referees. He wrestled hard and had a good attitude,†said Struck. Two other athletes fell in their opening match, and did not get the chance for repechage. Anthony Giraldo of New Jersey had a 2-0 lead after the first period over Jorge Martinez Lopez of Mexico at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. However in the second period, Lopez got his offense going, scoring takedowns and multiple turns from the mat to secure a technical fall over Giraldo, 2-9, in 3:41. Giraldo was eliminated from the repechage when Lopez lost his next match. Also falling in his opener was Devin Bahr of Wisconsin at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. Bahr was unable to stop the high-powered attack of Hossein Assadikolmati of Iran, 0-8, in 1:01. Assadikolmati fell short of the finals, and Bahr did not get another chance to compete.
