Two U.S. wrestlers placed in the top 10 of their weight classes as the 1999 Cadet World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships, held in Nykoping, Denmark, July 28-31. The competition featured the best 15-17 year old wrestlers in the world, competing in Greco-Roman, one of the two Olympic styles of wrestling.Eli Ross of Owatonna, Minn. placed sixth at 100 kg/220.25 pounds, and Justin Millard of Lacyville, Pa. placed eighth at 85 kg/187.25 pounds.
Ross won his first three matches of the tournament. He pinned Alex Kastl of the Czech Republic in 15 seconds, then won a tight 4-4 referee's decision over Ali Armanpour of Iran. In the third round, Ross stopped Yogesh Dodke of India, 3-1.
He was defeated in the quarterfinals by Ramazi Devadze of Georgia, 4-0, eliminating Ross from medal contention.
Millard won his first two matches, beating Peter Csorgo of Slovakia, 11-4, and scoring a 10-0 technical fall over Pawel Lisek of Poland in 3:50. In the quarterfinals, Millard lost to Evagelos Zabrakas of Greece, 4-0.
It was the second straight year that Millard placed in the top 10 in the world on the Cadet level. Millard finished eighth at the 1998 Cadet World Freestyle championships at 187.5 pounds.
The other eight members of the U.S. team did not place in the top 10 of their weight classes, and therefore did not score team points for the United States.
The 1999 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team was coached by Joe Russell of Minnneapolis, Minn. and Gary Mayabb of Kansas City, Mo.
The wrestlers qualified for the U.S. team at the Cadet World Team Trials, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., April 9.
