SOFIA, Bulgaria – The last four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws at the Junior World Championships. They will compete on Wednesday, the final day of Greco-Roman competition.
Two of the U.S. athletes competing on Wednesday were also on last year’s team, Isaiah Varona at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Lucas Sheridan at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Varona opens against Daniel Kocar of Slovakia, while Sheridan will face Tarek Abd Elsalam Shibil of Egypt.
“Isaiah was here competing last year. He was competitive in his matches. He has international experience and is at the USOEC, so he is training Greco-Roman all year,†said U.S. Coach Mark Halvorson.
“At the Youth Olympics, Luke wrestled for a medal. Last year, he was in the repechage here and had a close match for the opportunity to wrestle for a medal. He’s feeling good,†he said.
The other two U.S. team members are competing in their first Junior World Championships, Sahid Kargbo (Alexandria, Va/Patriot Elite) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Sam Stoll (Kasson, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Kargbo, who attends George Mason Univ., will face Filip Sacic of Croatia, who was fifth in the 2012 Cadet World Championships.
“Kargbo has great talent but not a lot of international experience at this level, but you never know. He wrestled great at the Trials, and made a lot of progress in the last few weeks,†said Halvorson.
Stoll, a high school star, drew Alexandros Papadatos of Greece in his opening match. Papadatos recently won a gold at the Olympic 2013 event held in Ancient Olympia, Greece.
“We are excited about him, a young, talented heavyweight who moves good. He beat a really good wrestler to win the Trials and threw four bodylocks at the Trials. If he gets in a position to throw you, he throws,†said Halvorson.
