Downing, Smith remain in medal hunt at Women¹s Junior World Wrestling Championships in RomaniaTwo U.S. wrestlers remain in contention for medals after the second day of the FILA Junior Women¹s World Wrestling Championships, held at Bucharest, Romania, Aug. 14. The competition features the best 17-20 year old women wrestlers in the world.
Remaining unbeaten is Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind./UM-Morris) at 68 kg/149.75 lbs. On Saturday, Downing defeated Kristie Thibodeau of Canada for her third win of the tournament.
Also still in medal contention is Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Minn. Storm) at 75 kg/165.25 lbs. Smith lost her only match on Saturday, by pin to Tomioka Taeko of Japan in 2:45. Based upon her two victories on Friday, Smith advances on into the medal rounds.
The other six members of the U.S. team did not advance, and will not be eligible for medals. All are expected to place in the top 10 of their weight classes, however.
It was a tough day for the U.S. team on Saturday, as American athletes lost five of the six matches contested. Besides Smith, U.S. athletes who suffered losses on Saturday were Thisbe Reardon (Oakley, Calif./Peninsula Grapplers) at 94.75 pounds, Olivia Ocampo (Oxnard, Calif. /UM-Morris) at 101 pounds, Danielle Hobeika (Cambridge, Mass./Dave Schultz WC) at 110 pounds and Aimee McNab (Malone, Wis./UM-Morris) at 138.75 pounds.
Medal match competition will be held on Sunday, August 15.
