U.S. to send strong teams to FILA Junior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, August 13-18

The United States will send talented teams to the 2013 FILA Junior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria August 13-18.  The competition includes the world’s best 17-20 year old wrestlers.

To be eligible for the FILA Juniors, athletes must be 17-20 years old and cannot turn 21 during the 2013 calendar year.

The teams are comprised of men and who won the 2013 U.S. FILA Junior World Team Trials in Stillwater, Okla. and women who won the Body Bar Women’s National Championships in Lakeland, Fla. 

2012 FILA Junior World Team members Alex Dieringer, and Austin Marsden, will again represent the U.S. on the freestyle team.  Dieringer competed at 74 kg/163 lbs. last year and Marsden wrestled at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.  Both wrestlers compete for Oklahoma State University.

Also competing for the U.S. freestyle team will be 2013 U.S. FILA Junior National champions Thomas Gilman, at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jason Tsirtsis, at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., and Kyle Snyder, at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.  Snyder was recently named the 2013 ASICS High School Wrestler of the Year.  Gilman, who was a former FILA Cadet World team member, competes for Iowa and Tsirtsis for Northwestern.

Sam Brooks will wrestle at 84 kg/185 lbs. in freestyle.  The Iowa Hawkeye is a FILA Cadet World bronze medalist.

The women’s freestyle team returns three place winners from the 2012 FILA Junior World Championships led by 2012 Junior World bronze medalist Erin Golston at 44 kg/97 lbs.  Jenifer Page, who was fifth at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., and Julia Salata, who was eighth at 72 kg/158 lbs. are the other returning place winners for the United States.

Other returning members of the 2012 U.S. FILA Junior World team include 2013 ASICS High School Wrestler of the Year Haley Augello at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., 2013 University World team member Sarah Hildebrandt at 55 kg/121 lbs. and 2012, 2011 Junior World team member Jenna Burkert at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Three members of the 2012 FILA Junior World Greco-Roman team will return for the U.S.  2013 University World team member Geordan Speiller placed seventh at the 2012 Junior World Championships at 74 kg/163 lbs. and will return to wrestle that same weight.

Also returning are 2012 FILA Junior World team members Isaiah Varona at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Lucas Sheridan at 84 kg/185 lbs.  Sheridan wrestles for Indiana University

2013 U.S. FILA Junior National Champions Hayden Tuma at 60 kg/132 lbs., and Kevin Beazley at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., will also wrestle Greco-Roman for the U.S.  Tuma also recently won a 2013 Junior National Greco-Roman title in Fargo.  Beazley competes for Old Dominion.

The men’s freestyle team will be coached by Sean Bormet and Bill Zadick, the women’s freestyle team will be coached by Jason Moorman, Marcie Van Dusen and Erin Tomeo and the Greco-Roman squad will be coached by Mark Halvorson and Rodney Smith.
