KELLY WINS GOLD MEDAL AS FIVE U.S. ATHLETES WIN MEDALS AT 1999 WOMEN'SCADET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, AUGUST 7 

Five members of the U.S. Women's Cadet World team won medals at the 1999 Women's Cadet World Championships in Lodz, Poland, August 7.

Mary Kelly of Mahomet, Ill. won the gold medal at 43 kg/94 lbs., defeating Alexandra Shvedova of Russia, 12-6 in the finals.

Kelly won five straight matches during the tournament. She opened with pins over Julita Omilusik of Poland and Lear Peters of South Africa, then scored a 10-0 technical fall over Natalia Matvejeva of Ukraine. In the semifinals, she beat Brigitte Wagner of Germany, 4-0.

It was her second Cadet World medal in two years, to go along with a silver medal at the 1998 World Championships.

Winning silver medals were Melina Hutchison of Sodotna, Alaska at 49 kg/101 lbs. and Jenna Pavlik of Lewes, Del. at 70 kg/154 lbs. She was edged by Youlia Bartnovskaja of Russia, 4-3 in the gold-medal match.

Hutchison won her first five matches in the tournament. Her wins included a 7-3 victory over Ksenija Andrjuscenko of Latvia, a pin over Mette Knudsen of Norway, a 10-1 win over Katarzyna Gorcynska of Poland and a 7-1 win over Jamsran Ganchimeg of Mongolia. In the semifinals, Hutchison pinned Olga Krygina of Ukraine.

Pavlik lost her first match by pin to Monika Johansen of Norway, but rebounded with three straight wins. She pinned Melanie Malecha of Germany, stopped Raia Raytchova of Bulgaria, 6-4 and topped Hana Wirthova of the Czech. Republic, 7-3. In the gold-medal match, Pavlik lost to Natalia Gavrilova of Russia, 6-0.

Winning bronze medals were Erin Tomeo of Volant, Pa. at 52 kg/114 lbs. and Marcie Van Dusen of Twin Peaks, Calif. at 56 kg/123 lbs. Both wrestlers also won Cadet World bronze medals in 1998.

Tomeo won her first four matches, to qualify for the semifinals, where she was defeated by Lis Agnieszka of Poland, 12-8. In the bronze-medal match, she won by technical fall over Natalia Gouschina of Russia, 14-1.

Van Dusen won her first three matches, including a clutch 5-4 win over Lubov Volossova of Russia in the quarterfinals. She dropped an 11-0 technical fall to Saori Yoshida of Japan, 11-0, then defeated Anna Holk of Sweden, 4-0 in the bronze-medal match.

1998 Women's Cadet World Champion Micah Kelly of Mercer, Pa., placed fourth at 46 kg/101 lbs. , with a 2-2 record.

Cathilee Albert of Boulder, Colo. placed sixth at 65 kg/143 lbs., with a 2-1 record.

The team placed second overall behind team champion Russia in a field of 22 nations.
