FARGO, N.D. – There are no shortage of exciting matchups coming up in the final session of the eight-day Junior and Cadet Nationals.

And plenty of history could be made during the finals of the Junior Nationals freestyle competition.

Michigan’s Adam Coon (285 pounds) and Illinois’ Davonte Mahomes (160) have reached the finals and are one win away from earning prestigious USA Wrestling Triple Crowns.

The Junior Nationals freestyle finals are set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Juniors have been eligible for the Triple Crown since 2007.

Coon remains on track to become the first wrestler to win back-to-back USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crowns.

Coon, a University of Michigan recruit, won his third straight Junior Nationals Greco-Roman title on Tuesday. He won his second straight Junior Folkstyle Nationals title in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Coon is seeking his second straight Junior Nationals freestyle title. He will face Nathan Butler of Kansas in the finals.

Mahomes will face Ohio’s Markus Scheidel in the finals. Mahomes already owns Junior Folkstyle and Junior Greco titles this year.

Returning Junior freestyle champions Nathan Tomasello of Ohio (120) and Anthony Collica of Ohio (145) also landed spots in the finals.

Tomasello will meet Kaid Brock of Oklahoma in the finals. Tomasello is seeking his third straight Junior Nationals title in freestyle.

Collica will battle Junior Nationals Greco champion Blayne Briceno of California in the finals.

One of the most anticipated finals matchups will come at 138 with Junior Nationals Greco champion Joseph McKenna of New Jersey scheduled to face 2012 Cadet Triple Crown winner Aaron Pico of California.

2012 Cadet Triple Crown winner Bo Nickal of Texas reached the 170 finals. He will face Georgia’s Tyler Askey in the finals.

Past Cadet Triple Crown winner Mitch Sliga of Indiana advanced to the Junior freestyle finals at 195. He will battle Oklahoma’s Joel Dixon for the title on Saturday.

2012 Cadet Triple Crown winner Hunter Marko of Wisconsin advanced to the Junior freestyle finals at 106. He will meet California’s Joe Cisneros for the title. Cisneros finished second in Junior Greco earlier in the week.

Junior Nationals Greco champion Roy Nash of Utah survived a scare in his last match of the day to make the finals at 220. Nash was turned to his back and nearly pinned early in his match with Indiana’s Fletcher Miller. But Nash fought off his back and then immediately turned Miller to notch a first-period fall.

Junior Nationals Greco champion Joshua Terao of Hawaii earned a wild 19-10 win over returning Junior freestyle champion Tommy Thorn of Minnesota on Friday morning at 120. Thorn fell short of placing while Terao will wrestle for seventh.

Juniors are wrestlers 16-18 years old.
