FARGO, N.D. – Two wrestlers remain alive for USA Wrestling Triple Crowns after the first day of the Junior Nationals freestyle competition on Thursday at the Fargo Dome

Michigan’s Adam Coon (285 pounds) and Illinois’ Davonte Mahomes (160) are off to fast starts as they take a run at history.

Coon recorded two technical falls and a quick pin on Thursday.

Coon remains on track to become the first wrestler to win back-to-back USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crowns.

Coon, a University of Michigan recruit, won his third straight Junior Nationals Greco-Roman title on Tuesday. He won his second straight Junior Folkstyle Nationals title in April in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Coon is seeking his second straight Junior Nationals freestyle title.

Mahomes rolled to four wins by technical fall, outscoring his foes 41-0 on Thursday.

Juniors have been eligible for the Triple Crown since 2007.

Returning Junior freestyle champions Tommy Thorn of Minnesota (120), Nate Tomasello of Ohio (120) and Anthony Collica of Ohio (145) went unbeaten on Thursday.

Thorn outscored his five opponents by a combined 50-0 score and Tomasello rolled to five wins by a combined 53-0 score.

Collica recorded four technical falls and a fall on Thursday.

2012 Cadet Triple Crown winner Aaron Pico of California (138) also went unbeaten on the first day. Pico is a FILA Cadet World Team member.

Pico won by technical fall in his first five matches, but survived a close call in his fifth match. Chris Garcia of Illinois came out strong and built an 8-0 lead over Pico. Two points from losing by technical fall, Pico regrouped to win by a 20-10 technical fall.

Past Cadet Triple Crown winner Mitch Sliga (195) finished unbeaten on Day 1 in freestyle.

California’s Joe Cisnero knocked off returning champion Tanner Rohweder of Iowa 10-2 in the third round at 106.

There are 1,064 wrestlers entered in the Junior Nationals freestyle tournament, an increase of 16 from last year.

There were 4,152 total entries in the eight-day ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Nationals, an increase of 182 from last year. The numbers in all seven tournaments went up this year in Fargo.

Junior wrestlers are 16-18 years old.

The Junior Nationals freestyle tournament resumes at 9 a.m. on Friday. The finals are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
